Show SALT LAKE ROCKED BY AN EARTHQUAKE THREE DISTINCT SHOCKS ARE FELT, BUT DAMAGE PONE IS VERY SLIGHT, Tremblor Causes Terror Among Residents, Resi-dents, Many of Whom Rush for the Open When Buildings Begin to Sway and Plastering Fall From Ceilings. Salt Lake City Three distinct earthquake shocks were felt in this city Sunday morning, one of which was of two minutes and ten seconds' duration, and of unusual intensity, swaying buildings and causing a veritable verit-able panic among the residents, when the plastering was shaken from the fillings of many homes and bric-a-brac was scatered about the floors. Chimneys Chim-neys on several buildings toppled over, but aside from the scare to the residents, the property damage was trifling. The first shock came at 7:28 a. m., and was of 2 minutes, 10 second duration, dura-tion, the second at 8:38, lasting 20 seconds; and the third shock, lasting 20 second, came at 11:26. The center of the disturbance was Salt Lake. Other sections of the state suffered but little. Provo, Bingham, Ogden and other cities report almost no damage. Salt Lake's panic, while it lasted, was widespread. Hotel guests rushed frantically from their rooms and down stairs, many being restrained re-strained by force from descending fire escapes. The few Sunday morning occupants oc-cupants of the big down-town buildings dashed in terror into the streets. Slumberers in the residence districts, rudely awakened by the first shock, hastened out of doors. According to the united opinion of all claiming knowledge of earthquakes, there is no further danger; the earth block is quiet in a new lodging place. Dr. Fred J. Pack, in charge of the elsmograph at the University of Utah, says that the three earthquake shocks traveled from the northwest to the southeast and were entirely local in their nature. "Never In the history of the city, or at least since the seismograph was Installed," says Dr. Pack, "has there been such a distinctly local shock, though such shocks have been experienced experi-enced elsewhere." He predicts that other shocks in this section are likely to follow, but does not believe there is any danger from the quakes. |
