Show TRAIN STRIKES LANDSLIDE. fireman and Beggageman Killed in Accident on Union Pacific. Ogden. Fireman S. G. Lowham ol Evanston, Wyo., and Baggageman C. J. Gordon of Ogden were instantly killed in an accident on the Union Pacific at 3:05 Wednesday morning. The train, running at thirty miles an hour and a few minutes late, struck a landslide a mile and a quarter west of Castle Rock and fifty-six miles east of Ogden. The accident ac-cident happened in what is known to the railroad men as "Cement Cut," on a section of the road that has little trouble for years. The landslide land-slide was small, consisting of one big rocc and some debris, the whole weighing not more than two tons. It fell in a. way to obstruct onei rail, leaving the other clear. The I engineer engi-neer and fireman both stuck to their post, the fireman being killed and the engineer escaping without a scratch. Five cars, the mail car, the baggage car and three coaches, left the track with the engine. In the baggage car was Baggageman C. J. Gordon. It is contended that he must have been knocked unconscious when the shock came and as the cars were immediately on fire his body was not recovered. |
