The news ha; been received from Chihuahua, Mex Ico, that, pressed hy a tax collectoi for what is charged 10 have beei exorbitant taxes on their oxen am horses, which they were unable t pay, Toniosachic Indians and Mexi can ranchers at San Andres, this state, killed the official and severa deputies and are now in open revoli against the government. The revolt is said to have beei caused by the action of the state gov ernment in increasing the tax on al work oxen and horses to three cents a day. This aroused the anger of the native ranchers, who owned little farms in the valley. A number were returning from e cheap theater when a discussion o! the tax arose. They became intoxi cated, and when a tax collector ap peared, threatening confiscation ol their property for non-payment, they rebelled, shooting the official and sev eral of his followers. The country is thickly populated with descendants of Tomosachic In dians and the ranchers in the, district are known as the "sharpshooters oi Chihuahua." |
