Show Too HI u (ill Tor the Indian. These military anecdotes remind me of a story I heard Gen. Sheridan tell once, and which I do not remember liaving seen in print before. The general at the time was in command of some western troots fighting the Indiana. A band of the latter had made a sudden attack on adetaclunentof his men, but fortunately they had a mountain howitzer mounted on a mule. Not having time to take it off and put it in position, they backed up and blazed away at the Indians. The load was bo heavy that the mule and nil went tumbling down the hill toward the savages, who, not understanding that kind of lighting, took to their heels. Afterward one of them was captured, and when asked by Sheridan why lie ran, replied: "Me big Injun, not afraid of little or big guns, but when white man fires whole jackass at Injun, he don't know what to do."
