Gas lighting was first Introduced ia England, but Pwis followed In good time and with a splendor unequaled elsewhere. In like manner America, Germany Ger-many and somo other countries havo been earlier iu tho use of electric lighting, but the Parisians, with their superior taste and skill in all matters of municipal arrangements arrange-ments and appointments, are destined to inako by far the most brilliant use of the new illuminant. Within one year, or within two years at tho furthest, it is confidently claimed that Paris will bo Incomparably the best lighted city in the world, and that electricity will have superseded gas in public use. In 1878, at the time of the universal exposition, the municipal goverment ordered the experimental experi-mental illumination of the Avenue do 1'Opera and several open spaces with ojeo-tricity; ojeo-tricity; but tho new system was not ripe for large nse, and the experiment was soon abandoned. Its principal effect was the stimulus it gave to the gas company, which invented and put into use certain largo compound burners using 1,400 liters per hour, und giving a most brilliant light. The great electrical improvements of the past decade wero exhibited in tho French exposition of 18S9, and were studied with the utmost caro by the Parisian authorities authori-ties and municipal engineers.
