Show I Smoke From The Weekly Pipe i M Humbug Ministers. H In keeping public interest whetted up on a M matter of general damphoolishness, a combina- H tion of a scrubby lot of long haired he-virgins is H difficult to beat. M From that choice assortment of frock-coated 1 psalm singers in Salt Lake who have appointed 1 themselves their brothers keepers here and who H have spent the last two weeks daubing their fing- M ers in the mud of the tenderloin, have come since H our last issue a number of patriotic utterances H that we feel justified in repeating. H Said that learned gentleman of the cloth, Bish- H op Spaulding, Sunday last. "It is not easy to live H in the year 1911 and in Salt Lake and be an op H timist." H Declared Reverend Samuel R. Colladay, Dean H of Sf. Mark's Cathedral, the same morning, "As H Christian men and women, as men and women H of great responsibility, possessing great influence H in the city, we must do our full part in swelling H this tide until it becomes a mighty purifying H flood and. our city is morally clean." H Dr. Paden, whose wash-tub activities with the H soiled linen of Salt Lake's underworld in his M pulpit two weeks ago secured for him the con- H tempt of all decent citizens, echoed his previous H diatribe to this effect: H "He (speaking of the Almighty) will convince H the world that the Eternal does care whether our cities are ruled according to his holy laws H or according to the dictates of this or that un- H holy compromise; that he does care whether the M laws of our land are enforced as he enforces the m laws of nature or pushed aside as the selfish H strong push aside or trample on those who for H the moment seem weak." H Agitator Reese is reported as declaring that H the first impression a stranger has of Salt Lake B is that it is "the worse town in the country." H The Reverend R. P. Nichols at the Iliff Meth- H odist Church called attention to the prevailing H emptiness of church pews in Salt Lake while "Sa- H tan's glittering resorts are crowded." H What a delightful spectacle presents itself H when these gentlemen of the church face their H congregations with a Sunday morning whine that H would make a cub coyote climb a tree, while re- H sponsible business men whoso reputations for per- H sonal Integrity and cleanliness are impregnable H to attack are trying earnestly and conscientious- H ly to minimize conditions that this and every H other city has constantly to contend with brini;- M ing to the work the experience and sagacity of Hj their business careers, the results of careful study fl and experiments and the courage to proceed with H the ideas they believe to be right in the face of H all the calumy and abuse heaped upon them by M political and personal enemies and those minis- H terial buzzards who seem to delight in varying H tlie monotony of their Sunday flights into the H Unknown by swooping down into civic quagmires H to pick at the carrion carcass of the social evil m and its kindred vices. H - When to the usual dogmatism of a pulpiteer's H remarks and his paucity of ideas is added the H expression of such sentiments as are quotel H above, is it really so very difficult to find the W answer for the empty pews in some of our lead- H ing churches? H Where in all thin scarlet letter pulpiteering H that has emanated from several Salt Lake di- H vines the past ten days has there come one sin- H gle word of practical advice to those public offl- Bf; cials who are striving to handle the situation Hg here in a manner that will ultimately cleanse M the city to a greater degree than is enjoyed nt HI present by any other city its size west of the Mis- H souri river? Where in their cant and vitrolic condemnation condemna-tion of individuals and the city administration is there to be detected a single suggestion as to the proper solution of the problem they dilly dally with? - Not one of them can come forward today, Tomorrow, To-morrow, the day after or a month hence with an original plan that would receive a moment's consideration con-sideration from the serious-minded citizens of this or any other community. Of greater benefit is it, according to their peculiar pe-culiar code of professional ethics, to flaunt from their rostrums what they term the unusual volume vol-ume of depravity tolerated in Salt Lake and which, could they stop their cawing long enoug to investigate for themselves rather than accer as true the buncombe of professional political liars, they would quickly find to be as false as the banner of self acclaimed Godliness they fling above their own pulpits. All honor to those Salt Lako ministers who have held themselves aloof from the muck-dabbling the past ten days. Poor Old Brigham. We note that Mrs. C. E. Allen could not refrain re-frain from again resolving; her latest contribution contribu-tion to political literature being directed against a Brigham Young tray in the silver service of the battleship Utah, which has already been accepted ac-cepted by the government. Battling side by each with her was that other energetic "suffering-yet," Mrs. Q. S. Cowan, who showed just how good and true an American she is by her remarking regarding the mayoralty mayor-alty candidate and the coming elction, to the fatigue of the others present and the delight L of those who like to see a convention tickled by the unconscious humor of one who doepn't appreciate herself when she is out of place. Regarding Mrs. Allen and her ill-advised resolution res-olution and supporting remarks, there Is no doubt but that she is thoughly sincere in anything any-thing she undertakes, but her friends who realize real-ize her sterling qualities and energy wish that she would turn her talents to other account and not make the Welkin ring every five minutes with a resolution and a tirade wnlch only makes her ludicrous in the eyes of a public which does not appreciate her really fine qualities. What the idea was of burdening a party with a lot of old junk that long ago went into the discard is difficult to discern and the party would bo much better off if the lady would remain quietly at home or as an alternative take another an-other little trip as a delegate to that widely heralded German art exhibit. And by the same token, a political convention conven-tion is no nice pasture for Mrs. Cowan. We wouldn't be surprised to learn that Dr. Paden is against the opening of barber shops on Sunday, or for that matter any other day in the week. FINE FOR THE AMERICANS The decision of the Republican party leadens to put a municipal ticket in the field is all that was needed to insure an American party victory at the polls in November. With the so-called "Business Men's" ticket announced and the Republicans in the field with u second, nothing further will be required to cement the factions of the American organization so solidly that the Bransford victory and that for his ticket will insure Salt Lake an American government gov-ernment for four years to come. The Republican primaries are to bo held Tues- day, October 10th, and the convention Thursday, the 12th. MONT FERRY'S SELECTION The choosing of W. Mont Ferry as chairman of the new American city committee means more to Americans than any other move since the convention. con-vention. Mr. Ferry's ability for organization and his thorough knowledge of the political situation here will enable him to direct the fight with sure generalship. gen-eralship. He served in the city council six years and is now president of the council. Motto for those who join the Herald-Republican staff: Abandon all ethics of the profession, profes-sion, ye who enter here. AMERICAN SOLIDITY Even before Darmer's statement that he would not attempt to run independent of the party ticket for mayor, those who have watched the development develop-ment of the so-called insurgent movement in the American party knew that the real men who, believing be-lieving they were right, have been directing the opposition to Mayor Bransford, would abide by the majority rule of the convention. These men are I too big in personal and political caliber to bolt the party even after a majority ruling antagonistic antagonis-tic to their wishes. The rank and file of American Ameri-can voters have swung in behind Bransford on the party ticket ninety-nine per cent, strong and those who haven't are the political hangers-on from whom loyalty has never been expected despite" de-spite" their spasmodic efforts to impress the real men of the party with their ability and genuine Americanism. Don't despair, gentle reader, Sunday is coming com-ing and with it the editorial "Business and Trade" review in the Tribune. Daly Heeds His Master's Voice. The spectacle Assistant City Attorney Daly made of himself at the American convention on Saturday last not only disgusted his friends, but excited considerable unfavorable comment among even the 'most radical members of the anti-Bransford anti-Bransford forces. Of course, it must be taken into consideration that he realized he was fighting for his job for the next few years, and to a man in his position the fear of making an ass of himself was as nothing beside the thought of a possible cavity in the full dinner pail. It was a terrible thing for him and for t,he precious Dininny to suddenly see in perspective the neoessity of going to work after January first without any assistance from the public crib, and so it was but natural that the delegates should have been treated to his swan song to the music of the counting of the votes which gave Bransford the mayoralty nomination. The despicable thing about the Daly performance perform-ance was the certain evidence of his pliability and treachery. Only a few weeks have passed since ho personally went to Mayor Bransford at the office of tha latter, and told him that whether he wanted to or not, he simply had to rua for mayor for another term. And now after having hav-ing taken wise and proper council, he makes a scene in the convention after the votes have been counted because he is not gamester enough to conceal his bitterness. He's a fine bird, this Daly, who hung around the Almerican party until ho got a job and now, while Btill retaining if, is so willing to turn on the man to whom ho promised support only a little over two months ago. One blessing will come with the change in the form of our local government. It will eliminate the Dinlnny-Daly double-dealing delegation from (BHHHHI WM our midst, nnd wo suggest that that part of Hfl Paden's congiogAtion which revels in the fanc'i- H ful flights of that sky-pilot, hire these two 16- H pressed and depressing barristers to alternate H on such days .as the Paden perflormer may be H indisposed. |
