Show In Mexico H MADERO has doubtless been triumphantly H elected president of Mexico. But does he possess the statesmanship to so handle his H office that the poor of that land will have a H chance to work and to obtain their wages, with- H out following the first blatherskite who calls upon H them to join him in a revolution? H Diaz justified his arbitrary and often harsh H acts by declaring that no other course would H keep order and permit the works of peace to go H on undisturbed. H When Diaz first assumed the presidency of the H Republic, he called upon the strong men of H other nations to como to Mexico and help him H build up a state, intimating at the same time, that H the native material could not be depended upon H to do it. M Fifty years and more ago Lucas Alamon was H Mexican minister to the United States. Ho was fl perhaps the ablest man that Mexico had produced H for half a century. He was a diplomat, an au- J thor, scholar and statesman. H Ho declared that "Mexico will be, without M doubt, a land of prosperity, from its natural' ad- H vantages, but it will not be for the races that now M inhabit it." H He gave his reasons at length and closed with these words: H "May the Almighty in whose hands is the fate M of nations, and who by ways hidden from our M sight abases or exalts them, according to the de- M signs of his providence, bo pleased to grant unto M ours the protection by which He has so 'often B designed to preserve it from the dangers to which M It has been exposed." H iSince he pronounced those words Mexico has M been through the war with France and Austria; M out of the tumbling waves which racked the land M when that storm had passed, an iron soul H commended order and peace, and when it passed M on, the helm was seized by the iron hand of Diaz which for thirty yeurs held the land steady, in" M which it wonderfully advanced, but that hold was M broken at last by a new revolution and now he 'M who awoke that revolution to life, has been made M president. M The world will anxiously watch to see if he is H strong enough to so guide the volatile people and M to lead them up into the paths of order and peace M and permit honest industry to resume its work M of transformation. Surely the world will wsh M him well. H |
