Show SMOKE FROM THE WEEKLY PIPE A PECULIAR NOMINATION. What's The Idea? Upon the ticket mailed to members of the Cdmmercial club during the week from which they are today to select the names of five gentlemen gentle-men to serve as members of the board of governors gover-nors for the next three years, the name of C. G. Seelye, manager of the Mountain States Telephone Tele-phone and Telegraph company appears. Now personally Mr. Seelye is a splendid man, and we would be pleased to see hi'm honored by being elected a director of any club in the city, with the exception of the Commercial club. The reason should be readily apparent to all, and if it is not it may be stated very briefly. There i? no public service commission in this city and it is the province of the Commercial club to, whenever necessary, render all possible assistance in righting the wrongs practiced on the community. commu-nity. If such service as the Mountain States Telephone Tele-phone and Telegraph company is giving Salt Lake is to continue, it is certainly up to the Commercial Commer-cial club, providing the City Commissioners do not anticipate it, to demand why the com'munity must suffer under such a service as patrons are recehing at present, and it stands to very good reason that if Mr. Seelye should be elected to the board, he would hardly be the gentleman to make an aggressive campaign against the Bell company. Besides he has been here only a few months and certainly has been too busy to delve very deeply into many local questions affecting affect-ing the community outside of the pay for two telephone tele-phone systems. If the city is to get relief from some of the impositions now practiced by at least three public service corporations, it is not to be expected that it will come through the efforts of the head of one of theim, and so We believe the gentleman should have no place on this board at the present time. . |
