Show Let Him Begin At Home M A WIRE came the other day announcing that H "plans are in contemplation for sending H abroad a government official to give illus- H trated lectures in the important cities of Europe . on the beauties of America." H We suggest that the lecturer, before going to ' Europe, practice for two or three years in our ! eastern cities. The people on this side of the At- M lantic need that information much more than it is needed in Europe. Our belief is that the boys M and girls who graduate from the high schools and M lesser colleges of the eastern states require that special information vastly more than Europeans H do We suspect that not one in ten of them can H answer off hand where Yosemite and Yellowstone M parks are; who know what river Shoshone Falls M are In, where the Grand Canyon of the Colo- M rado is; who have the slightest idea where Shasta H or Whitney or Ranier is, or which boundary of M Oregon the Columbia makes, or how to bound H iColorado, or ever heard of the Muir glacier; or H how much of the west is conserved for their bene- H fit; or has the slightest idea how a poor man on M the frontier goes to work to stand off tho Secre- H tary of the Interior and make a living. ( If there is some hanger on in Washington jH who must have a job, let the government have M some pictures prepared and start him out JM first in New York City and then go to Boston. M He should give one lecture and show his pictures M at each of the great eastern universities, begin- M ning with Harvard. Many of the graduates of 'H those schools make a journey to Europe, and M when they reach there they should have at least M a vague idea oi some of the signal stations in H their own country. fl |
