Show JUST SO. What a terrible thing this ecclesiastical jurisdiction juris-diction is! From the way some papers and people howl one might think it was a- menace to civil authority. au-thority. In Utah Bishop Scanlon possesses it for Roman Catholics; Bishop Spaulding possesses it for Episcopalians, and others for other churches. For these papers and people the silly season is not for a day or a week, a month or a year, but for all time. Poor fools! Deseret News. But suppose Father Kiely should issue a secret circular stating in effect that Bishop Scanlon had fixed things in the land office so that Catholics only might seize all the good lands now in the Uintah reservation, how would that strike the dirty slave of the News who is so flip about the "silly season?" Or suppose Dean Eddy were to put out a circular informing Episcopalians how to proceed in order to acquire the valuable lands on the' reservation, res-ervation, because Bishop Spaulding had fixed it in the land office, who would be exclaiming "poor fools?" What a church it must be that has to employ the Ananias of the modern world to defend its falsehoods and its grafts. |
