Show THAT LOYALTY, ill I The Fourth of July speech which Brother Pen- 1 1 rose gave us editorially on Tuesday last was most j j ' touching. The loyalty which has been a ruling ' trait with Latter-day Saints from the first was , , , touchingly portrayed. All it needed was one of the ' i secession songs which Brother Penrose wrote , when the war was sore, and an extract or two iH from Brother Brigham's sermons of those days. , fl Like this, for instance: "The north prays to God for destruction upon the south, the south prays 9R for the destruction of the north, and I say 'Amen I j t jji to both prayers.' " But the News gave itself away I 91 in this sentence: "The Latter-day Saints see, be- ! 9fl sides, in the foundation of this republic, the pre- j jfl paration of the Almighty of a place of safety I I IB where the Church of Christ could be established , H in this age and attain the strength necessary for its ' . jfl important mission in this world." ' J I jB What does the News mean by that? That in no j B other land except this free republic could a band ! j 9 of men defy the laws, continually violate the con- j i B stitution, struggle year after year to build up in I B the confines of a free republic on ancient Asiatic jj fl despotism with the express purpose of eventually , ' B turning the wheels of progress back and placing fl men once more under the heel of a priestly des- jfl potism? When the News claims that its creed is J j j Jfl in harmony with this republic it ''es. When it I , fl claims that its people are taught loyalty to Repub- B lican institutions it lies; when it claims that there ' jfl is any record of Mormon allegiance to the repub- " , jfl lie, save a subordinate allegiance, it not only lies I ; fl but it insults the intelligence of every man in ! j fl |
