Show Last Move To Establish Church Rule. Political parties are essential to a free country coun-try that depends upon the ballots of the people to preserve their liberties; that they may keep posted upon and take an interest In the questions of government. The Insidious article in the News, which practically prac-tically is a notice to the Mormon people to drop partisanship and vote a solid ticket, is the boldest move yet made to re-establish a theocratic government gov-ernment in Utah, such a government as prevailed here, first openly and then under republican forms, up to 1889. There Is a double purpose In it. One is that the church may absolutely control the politics of the State; the other is to keep the masses of the people as ignorant about the questions ques-tions which fill the public mind and to keep them as ignorant of the history of our country and the principles on which it was founded and is carried on, as they were prior to 1890. We have no hesitation in saying that men who recommend such a course to this people are public pub-lic enemies. We have no hesitation in saying that men who will obey a mandate of that kind are not fit to take any part in the government of this country and should be disfranchised to a man. Our country has nothing short of the sword to protect itself with save the ballot, and the man who claims the protection and still prostitutes the American ballot should be stripped of his citizenship In a moment. |
