Show i in, .III.IMI .if - sporting Life, The preliminaries in the state tennis tournament tourna-ment for the championship in single will be played this afternoon on the B street, Miller and Third South courts, and the preliminaries in the doubles tomorrow at 'the same places. There Is more interest in the contests than has ever before been manifested in the sport in this state, and while many entered merely to augment aug-ment the interest in the game, and with the certain cer-tain knowledge that they stood no more show for qualifying in the finals than a Russian squadron squad-ron would in butting into a Jap torpedo boat, the games will well merit the enthusiasm that has been aroused. The finals promise to be very fast, and it is hard to predict who the winner of the Schramm cup wih be for this year. Many seem to think that the final bout will narrow down to R. T. Badger and Frank Roberts, who both play at a whirlwind pace, but there are many other lives ones, among them the Salis-burys, Salis-burys, Harry and Carl Roberts, Grifllin, Boyd, Masters Mas-ters and a number of dark horses who may sprint in at the finish. As nearly as can be judged from past performances, perform-ances, the players in today's games dope up about as follows: Griflln will probably tend to Dodd Riter soon after sun-up, and Boyd, to whom is to be given the greatest credit for managing the meet, is down on the book to trim McLeod. Masters has the long end with Conrad, and the stars read that Owen Grey and L, E. Riter have an even break. Froiseth will do things to Topliff, and the dope is not dear on Chandler vs. Raymond, a similar condition existing in the case of Banter and Henry. Hempell will be taken in tow by James Salisbury, and Harry Roberts will probably put It over Pembroke. Carl Roberts and George Rust will have a breszy fight, with things in Roberts' favor and Goodwin will be a pudding for Bad ger to devour quickly. Channlng will fall by the wayside in his deal with Frank Roberts and Dr. Plummer will probably go the same route in meeting meet-ing Wnitney. Garnett will not be too difficult for Walker Salisbury, and Ash, Blackburn, Smith and Walker will fight it out on rather equal ground. |
