OCR Text Hj! ( There is much comment regarding the possible Hjj ' effect of the ascendancy of the Smoot slate in the Hi! State, upon the senate Jal aspirations of Senator H Kearns. Certainly the victory of the junior Sen-m Sen-m ator does not add any rubicund hues to the politics politi-cs cal prospects of Mr. Kearns, as almost the entire M State machinery will be arrayed against him in H case of Republican success. This will unques-H unques-H tionably have considerable weight with the legis-B legis-B lators, who will naturally court favor at the ex-B ex-B ecutive pedestal. At the same time the victory B of Cutler does not necessary bewreath the brow K of Mr. George Sutherland with any new laurels. B In the first place, his alliance with the greatly H'l anathemeti'ed Smoot-Andorson-Callister combina-BBI combina-BBI ' tion has alienated from him many of his old time HK I warm supporters. Then there is before him the H ponderous figure of Thomas Kearns, who would B dip deep into the golden vaults and bring ail his H versatile myrmidons into operations to prevent H the election of Sutherland. Under these clrcum-B clrcum-B stances, it seems very probable that out of the H clouds of discord some new senatorial fiugre may H loom up prominently and that both of them may H Le laid carefully away in the cemetery of defunct political colebritities. Besides this, Mr. Sutherland Suther-land is dealing with people not particularly renowned re-nowned for fidelity or fealty. This has particular reference to Messrs. Twins Anderson and Callis-ter, Callis-ter, whose desertion of former political associates has already been referred to in these columns. The rejection of both candidates, under these conditions, con-ditions, looks like far more than a possibility.
