Show At the last moment the Cutlerites were forced to flash the trump card that everyone knew was , loitering in the sleeve of the junior senator. This was the withdrawal of Glazier of Utah, when he encumbered the pathway of Cutler, for whom Mr. Smoot was willing to sacrifice every other man on his slate. After that the only crease in the Smoot blue print was the nomination of Chiris-tiansen, Chiris-tiansen, which, to Mr. Smoofs opponents, covered cov-ered a multitude of misdemeanors. Judge Charles S. Zane was also to have been taken care of by the slate in a casual sort of way, although the judge himself was by no means allied to the Smoot army. Mr. D. N. Straup, although less widely known that Judge Zane, was able to capture cap-ture the nomination through a recognition of his abilities and superior political management Judge Zane's failure to secure the nomination was a source of some surprise, as it was believed that his popularity would bring him the nomination. It is conceded, however, that Mr. Straup is thoroughly qualified for the place. |
