Show GEORGE SHEETS. ij H It is amusing to read the spats of the daily H papers over the possibility of the appointment of J' H Geo. Sheets Chief of Police in case a certain ticket ' H is elected. The inference of the News and Her- ' fl aid is that such an appointment would be some- ( thing dreadful. Our own judgment is that were H it an elective office and Sheet had the nomina- ' H tion, and that then the voting could be confined i H to property owners and taxpayers, he would be ' H triumphantly elected, for he is one of the most H adroit and effective officers ever on the Salt Lake j H force. ' M We are told that with him Chief "this would H be a wide open town." i H As Chief he would be under the immediate di- I H rection of the Mayor and Council and no more H obedient officer was ever on the force, "But," H says another, "He knows every crook, every , H tough, every sport, every thug, in the country." ! I Is that a bad faculty to possess? With the strikes in Colorado and the rooting out of the criminals I 'I there who pose as labcring men; with the clos- i-i ing down of the mines and reduction works in H Butte, all the sinster spirits there who live by H working unsuspecting working men, will have to I H get out," there wijl be a great exodus from that " U ' H place and a full quota from buth directions will ; H find their way here. A thousand will come wjio- Y 'I never would, were it known in advance that jf! H George Sheets was Chief of Police of this city. ' H Some people have common sense and such peo- ' H pie know that as a rule effective men for f H the office of Chief of Police we not as a rule 'l fl men who shine as Sunday school teachers or 4 H as the heads of Bible classes.
