Show MR. KUHN'S DEATH When Mr. Ad Kuhn died last week Ogden lost i one of Its great citizens. Not only Ogden but the I state. He was a pioneer and that means he was I a state builder of the West. Montana and Idaho knew him and while his best years were spent in Utah there is hardly a state in the Rocky moun- I tain region that does not bear some of the scars of the battle that Ad Kuhn fought for civiliza- tion. He met the adverse forces if progress and , overcame them; his struggle was always against the wrong and for the right. He made money, but every dollar, was an honest dollar. In his lat er years, as practical head of the firm which bore 1 his name, he built upon the ground work of solid refutation which had distinguished him as a man among men, and when the end came there was no l one to say that his life was lived in vain. No won der the business classes and civic associations t turned out to do him honor; no wonder such gen eral manifestations of regard fiom a whole com- munity. t vJ & i The telephone franchise race came to a sudden stop Monday night when Mayor pro tem Nye put a quietus on the hopes of the Home company by I vetoing the franchise passed by the council; the death-blow came when the erratic council sustained sus-tained the veto. To the average citizen the mat- ter was not entirely clear. The public clamor was tor two systems and there were murmurs of dissent dis-sent when the mayor knocked out the Home. The reasons which His Honor assigned for' his official . decapitation of the franchise are clear, concise, I able, and convincing. It seems the council got in a hurry and passed a franchise with a lot of blow holes in it. Whether by design or otherwise (V deponeth sayeth not. When the mayor pointed out jr these defects the council discreetly got in behind i the mayor and the Home company woke up on the edge of nowhere. The result is exactly what the Bell managers I were playing for. They now have a new lease of life for thirty years with no maximum rate limit. If the Home company quits, and that now seems to bo the prospect, the Bell company will hold the foit in absolute monopoly, with no one to interfere inter-fere or make them afraid. It was a neat piece of handiwork, whoever managed it, and whoever gets the glory, one thing is sure, the Bell people will continue to make the money. & tj Some odd years ago the people of Billtown had an acute attack of waterworks and during a period of hysteria they voted $250,000 with which to build or buy a water system. It appears that the passage of time has not interfered with the legal status of this action and that sum is still at the disposition of the city fathers for the purpose r stated. That brings me up to chapter pne. The real Mayor, Bill, is now in the East, and his mission mis-sion is to ramble where trust companies congre-'y congre-'y gate for the purpose of either negotiating for the $400,000 bonds against the water plant now in operation, or to find a market for the bonds of a new system which the city is to build. So there may be something doing in the water question I after all. City Attorney Bagby seems to lead I the optimists'; he has a way of shaking his head knowingly and saying, "Watch Bill." He will. S8 & & At the present moment there is a little war between be-tween the city of Ogden and the county of Weber. The battleground has been transferred from Bill-1 Bill-1 town to the legislative halls of the State Legisla ture and the cause of the conflict is the old fight i over the indigent poor, which, like Bill, we have always with us. The county want to have the city legislated into the postion of chief manager of all quarantine cases inside the city limits; while the J city wants the privilege of doing all the quar- I antining with the proviso that the county shall pay the freight. Chairman Stanford of the commissioners, com-missioners, is leading the fight for the county Councilman Hendershot is protector-in-chief for the city. & 3 Apiopos of the resolution to investigate the btate Industrial School: Unless the committee of which Dr. A. S. Condon is chairman has a radical change of heart there is no probability of again hearing of that resolution before the resurrection. The enemies of Dr. Condon never accused him of not having his full share of local pride. The Industrial In-dustrial School is located at Ogden. Ihe school is all right. Condon knows it. That settles the resolution. |
