Show mum mjs By Marlene Haws 826-4859 marlenehcolorrCountry.net The Escalante American Legion Post 114 and the Bald Eagle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution worked with members of the community in presenting a display dis-play of Veteran's memorabilia at the high school on Nov. 8, followed fol-lowed by a program in the evening in the auditorium. A Flag Ceremony was held at the Veteran's Memorial on Nov. 11, with all the Elementary school students coming to sing patriotic songs and place small American flags around the memorial. Several families placed bricks in honor of their loved ones who served in the armed forces. This began a tradition tra-dition which will continue each Memorial and Veteran's Day when bricks can be placed in honor of any Veteran. Colleen Blake has been here visiting Harriet Priska for the past two weeks. I think Harriet said she was from England. Harriet picked her up at the airport air-port in Las Vegas, Nevada, they saw a couple of shows in Las Vegas before coming ,to Escalante by way of Zions Canyon. They visited Bryce, Canyon and Capitol Reef, attended the services for the Veterans (which touched Colleen very much) and a Boy Scout Court of Honor for Peter Christensen. Colleen was so taken by all the friendly people who greeted her during her stay here she was wishing she could live here! Harriet took her back to Las Vegas on Wednesday to catch her plane, this time traveling travel-ing by way of the South Rim of Grand Canyon. Rolain Alvey and her cousin, Eunice. Groves (from the Salt Lake area), took a little trip to St. George together last week. The had a good time shopping, eating and getting caught up on all the family news. Klyn and Marlene Haws were excited to get a call from their grandson, Ricky Klyn Haws, who is living in Hurricane, telling them that he has received his LDS Mission call. He will be going to Des Moines, Iowa right after Christmas. Klyn went into the service right out of high school, so his family is thrilled that he has chosen to fill a mission now. Klyn is a son of Rick and Randie Haws. Monte and Sylvia Luker have been in Salt Lake closing a deal on a house they were selling, which belonged to their son. They had to do a little manual labor on it so they were glad to get that done and get it sold. They got most of their family together for dinner while they were there. Winnie Washburn (Harriet Priska's mom) celebrated her 87th birthday at the monthly meeting of the Escalante Native Plant Society, Nov. 11. (You would never think Winnie was 87 to see her out helping to beautify the Escalante Main Street.) The meeting was held at the new home of Jenz and Kathleen Munthie. Winnie started the group early this year and it now has about 50 members! mem-bers! Tim Clark and Bruce Chesler spoke on noxious weeds and on designing drip irrigation systems. The next meeting will be held at the home of Joette Marie Rex on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. The public is invited. By the time you get another "County News" you will have the turkey almost thawed out (or eaten! Depends on which day you get your paper.) "Happy Thanksgiving" everybody. |
