Show PMJGUITCtI UGl'JS By Earl Roe 676-2376 wearlroeyahoo.com I am going to have to remember remem-ber to check my e-mail before I start to write my weekly column. col-umn. I apologize to Kay and Ann Richards for not getting this in last week. They drove from Salt Lake City to spend three days in Richfield cheering for our girls basketball team. The Richards family members have always been staunch supporters sup-porters of our Panguitch ball teams. Their mother Ingra was honored shortly before her death for never having missed one of our home games (and probably few if any of the "away" games. Kay, his brother Ned and his father Frank as well as all of Frank's brothers were members ' of our high school team back in their younger days. His dad and uncles were also on our "Town Team" back in the days when towns had their own teams. I remember when our Panguitch team played the "Negro Ghosts" who later became the Harlem Globe-trotters. Their star player was Suitcase Simmons who could make a basketball do everything but talk. Our high school math teacher LeGrand Dykeman, played in that game in the Social Hall. (This bit of trivia should jog the memories of many of our 'senior' 'sen-ior' readers.) Jay and Dudley Proctor, Clark and Gwen Frandsen, and Merle Stowell traveled to West Valley City on Feb. 29 to attend the funeral of Kenneth Jones Sr. (age 81). Kenneth is the father of Ann (Arlyn) Proctor, Margaret (Mike) Tebbs, Kenneth Jones Jr., Christopher Jones, and the husband of Mary. Jones. Mike and Margaret and . their family and many others with Panguitch . connections attended including Senator Tom Hatch and his wife Kay. Gwen said seeing and hearing Kenneth's grandchildren and great-grandchildren was very impressive. I attended the funeral of Kirk Moore yesterday and thought I might be able to name some of the former Panguitch residents who were in attendance. I recruited Merle Stowell to help me and the list was so long that I knew I could not write all of them so without meaning to slight anyone, I will list the ones with whom I got to visit and who do not come 'home' very i often. Donna, Lucille, JoAnn Dowdell and Melanie McEwen. (Maiden names which is how I remember them) Lavenda's sisters, sis-ters, Carol Ann, Iletta, Rosemary with their husbands and children and all of Kirk's living brothers and sisters and their families. A surprise for Lavenda and her children was to have their deer-hunting friends from California arrive. These friends have spent several years hunting and camping with the Moore family in the hills and mountains moun-tains around Panguitch. Others I had a short visit with were . Stewart and Wilma LeFevre, Art and Dorothy Chidester, Don Bunker, Bill (Billy J) Dodds wife and Danny and Rolana Marshall. . Many of Kirk's former students stu-dents were present and Bishop Clark Howard paid a' tribute to Kirk in their behalf. We know there are both pleasant and sorrowful funerals and Kirk's would have to be classed as pleasant and enjoyable. enjoy-able. Knowing Kirk's penchant for jokes and fooling someone, this was just what he would have ordered more laughter than tears. I am mentioning two more people who were present because of memories they bring back. Margene (Clark) Moore (Kirk's sister-in-law) was the object of my first crush as an 11-year-old boy. She used to come to Panguitch during the summer and stay with Veda Miller. I used to play with Veda's brother Dan, and when Margene was there, I used to find all kinds of reasons to be around Dan's home. Margene knew nothing of my "love affair", but many years later I told her of this and we both had a good laugh. Sherill Reid was one of my 5th grade students back in my first year or two of teaching. When he called to me I knew I should know him but I could not place him until he gave me his name. I believe I have only seen him once during all these years. His first remark was, "I was sure you would remember me because of all the recesses I missed and the evenings I spent staying in after school but I probably deserved them." I told him he probably ranked 1st or 2nd in this category. Sherll joined the Navy and is now retired. He owns the home across the street east of the elementary ele-mentary school and plans on being a part time Panguitch resident res-ident in the near future. Careless driving Soon we hope Will go the way Of brush and soap. Burma Shave |
