Show i A Good Idea To Sign, But Who Did It, Why? ! There has recently been a petition going around Escalante Asking people to sign to help ftop the implementing of day use and group fees on the monument. monu-ment. While we are sure that everyone will agree that this is something that must not be implemented. It is just another Slap in the face to our local population pop-ulation and an infringement of fveryone's right to the use of our public lands. However we need to take a closer look as to who initiated the petition and for what reasons? If you read the petition closely close-ly you would have seen that the person who initiated the petition is a proclaimed environmentalist environmental-ist and when coming to this town was very vocal in support of the monument. This person was especially vocal about why they thought these "little tiny-ranchers" tiny-ranchers" deserved to lose their rights! Originally from back east somewhere, this person apparently appar-ently read way too many Louie L' Amour novels, became infatuated infatu-ated with the romance of the west and decided it was a good place to move to. Befriended by several people in Boulder and Escalante who found it wasn't long before they could see what this person's agenda really was. From Wayne County to Escalante, Boulder and back this person has become a master at gathering the information infor-mation needed to serve their purpose. So now the real motive of this individual appears a motive that reveals this person is neither genuinely concerned about this town nor our rights as citizens. Rather, the concern is that things might not be "Oh-So-Good" if backpackers, those seeking solitude soli-tude and the romance of the West have to pay for its use. We also point out that the person per-son who wrote last week's (Feb. 26) Letter to the Editor on the same subject is cut from the same cloth. Although we will give her credit that she addressed some very good issues, both of these individuals are like all other self-serving environmentalists who have one agenda on their mind to make the West their playground Heaven forbid if they have to pay for anything. Merchants in this town from the grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations know exactly how much most of these "backpackers" those "seeking solitude" really spend. Squat! They will use the bathrooms to take a bath, get free water and air, and some steal a few groceries gro-ceries and be on their way! We do encourage everyone to sign these petitions but even better bet-ter than that, to take the time to write or email a letter to your County Commissioners, local and state Representatives and the Bureau Of Land Management. When all of these environmentalists environ-mentalists start screaming and yelling that, "these are our public pub-lic lands and we should not have to pay for the use of them" just remind them that they are the ones who have brought us to where we are today. They have made their bed and unfortunately unfortunate-ly we all may have to sleep in it! Sam & Debbie Spencer Escalante |
