Show mtiwmtffljs By Marlene Haws , , 826-4859 marlenehcolor-country.net I left my house this morning, Friday, solely to attend a first presentation at the "Escalahte Canyons Everett Ruess Days." It was done by a Navajo Indian lady, Lucille Hunt, of Moab. She was cute and very interesting. interest-ing. From there my sister, Deon Alvey, and I went to the community com-munity center and did some tie dying, then out into the street to see a wonderful art exhibit. Then we were drawn to what was going on in the old high school gymnasium. If we hadn't gone any place but there the day would have been well spent. The gym was filled with art exhibits, and vendors exhibiting a wide variety of things. Jewelry, Spinning and Weaving, Sculptured Furniture, Quilting, Aplique , Rock work, Wood work; Paintings, to name a few. Besides all the other artists, one whole comer of the gym was dedicated to an art exhibit of our own local artist Sheila Wooley Faulkner. I single her out because Sheila is almost blind now but has done lots of paintings in her time that she can really be proud of. There were cowboy poets, (See ESCALANTE on pg. 3) Escalante News From Page 3A singers, and workshops of all kinds. Family members of Everett Ruess were there which made the whole purpose of the celebration come to life. As I looked around, and I could only see a handful of Escalante people peo-ple there, I thought how sad it was that more people don't take the time to come out and participate partic-ipate in these arts and culture, of all kinds. There were lots of things for the kids to do too. Every entertainment enter-tainment was free. All we had to buy was what we absolutely wanted to. And I found quite a few things that were really worth my money ! I would hope that everyone would put this on their calendar for next year and try to attend even part of it. It was great. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Herb and Noreen Allen came up from St. George. Herb had letters that he has saved for many years that contained correspondence corre-spondence between his parents, Jennings and Mildred (then Postmaster of Escalante) Allen and the family of Everett Ruess. He presented these letters to the Ruess family to add to their memorabilia. A surprise presentation presen-tation for the family. Great gen erosity on Herb's part. Betty R. Alvey has just returned from a trip to South Jordan to see a new granddaughter. granddaugh-ter. The baby is a grandbaby of Greg and Irene Tait. Congratulations to all. Curtis and Marsha Koyle are making preparations to move to Nebraska. Curtis will be ranching ranch-ing there as he has been here. We will miss them and their family. They have lived in both LDS wards since they have been here. In fact Curtis was a member mem-ber of the bishopric in the LDS 1st. ward at one time. They have five children and we always hate to lose the children out of our schools. Carlyle Shurtz went to his home in Sandy to help his son celebrate his birthday, but is back at his home here again now. , Norman and Ardis Christensen went to Salt Lake City for the funeral services of Ardis's brother, Keith Chappell, 68. They stayed one night with Clyde and Terrie Christensen in Tooele while they were there, then stayed one night in . Bicknell with their daughter Julie Lyman on their way back - home. |
