Show Garfield County Jail Sets Graduation PANGUITCH . - The Garfield County Jail has set June 30 as its graduation date for the 2002-2003 school year. Nineteen students have completed complet-ed requirements for graduation, along with three students passing pass-ing the G.E.D. requirements. The fourteen students who are still housed at the jail will participate par-ticipate in a graduation ceremo- , ny at 11:15 a.m. at the Garfield County Jail. Adult Education Director and Jail Instructor Curtis Barney says, "The County Jail rates as one of the top education jails in the state." He explains that this is because of the great support given to education by Sheriff Than Cooper and Jail Commander Mel Miller. "Without the jail staff's willingness willing-ness to make education an important part of these students' programming, we would not have near the success rate we currently have," said Barney. Not only have the students been able to earn their G.E.D. or high school diploma, but as of this year, they are able to move on to college courses through Utah State University once they have completed their high ' school requirements. There are over 50 students enrolled in high school courses and over 20 currently taking college col-lege courses. With the jail having hav-ing 90-95 inmates housed, over 70 are involved in some form of education at the jail. Family and close friends of the students have been invited to the special graduation ceremonies, cere-monies, and for some f the students, stu-dents, it will be their first contact in many months, even years, with their family members. A luncheon will be provided by the Garfield County Jail and Garfield County School District and the public is invited to the graduation ceremony. |
