Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Another Labor Day holiday has come and gone - one of the wettest we have seen in a long time. The farmers have been so happy to have moisture for the growing season, but now they can't turn it off and the rain is turning a lot of hay black in the fields. They are hoping the monsoon mon-soon will be gone soon! Jim Alvey and sons came from Mapleton and reshingled the roof of Eva Dean Liston's house, then she returned home with them. She must trust them for a job well done - she didn't even stick around to see if it was going to leak! Clea Woolsey's family came from the Lehi area for the long weekend and worked the yards over around her new residence. They are putting in a sprinkling system for her lawn, planting grass, etc., and will be back another an-other weekend to finish up. The family of Norman and Ardis Christensen held their family fam-ily reunion at Pine Lake last week. The rain interfered but they had a gcod time in spite of it. Ross Shelley was seen in the vicinity of the lakes on Boulder Mountain. Guess he just couldn't stand it any longer, he had to come all the way from Delta to see if those fish are still biting. Clyde R. and Delia Bybee, New Plymouth, Ida., spent one night in town with Clyde R.'s sister, sis-ter, Mary Kazan. They also visited vis-ited relatives, Starns and Fon Mecham. Delia is a daughter of John Mecham, who was Starns' eldest brother. Malen and Stan Mecham, Tropic, also visited with them. Marie Griffin spent a few days in Cedar City helping to take care of her daughter, Trudy Dickerson, who was recently injured when her car rolled three times near the freeway exit to Bear Valley. The Senior Citizen bus took a load to Grover for the last performance per-formance of the season at the Hale Theatre. It was called "Educated Heart" and was a story about Boulder and Escalante. The Senior Citizens also had a little going away party for Lester Mendell. After dinner, Fay Alvey read a couple of poems, one she had written about Lester. Then Bill Bowmar played a number of "old time" music on the electric organ. Bill is a self-taught musician musi-cian and does very well. It was an evening well .spent. Quite a large number of our residents spent the weekend on Lake Powell. Those I heard of were: Bob, Mavis and Katie Munson and the families of Brent Cottam, Myron Cottam and David Townsend. I heard Dianna Steed say that quite a group were planning plan-ning a lake trip but they haven't reported in yet! Vernon and Peg Roundy, Dean and Kim Roundy and Daryl and Angel Roundy all came from Monroe for the long weekend. Steve ,and Cheryl Cox, St. George, came from their summer home in Boulder to spend some time with them also. Collette Cox called from Cedar City to see how much fun she was missing miss-ing out on! Jon and Jillyn Sorensen, Salina, were camped on the mountain. They came to town a couple of times and Klyn and Marlene Haws went on the mountain moun-tain to spend a few hours with them on two different days. Lane and Geraldine Liston went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where they met their children, Dan and Sherrie Meisenbach and family of Orange, Or-ange, Calif, for the weekend. They camped and had a wonderful wonder-ful time, then it was back to (See Escalante News On Page 6-A) Escalante News From Page 2-A school time for the kids. Those I know of camping at Posey Lake were: Theron and Dixie Mitchell, Don and Lillian Coleman and Bill and Bev Kuhns. They say Bill bagged a buck during dur-ing the bow hunt. (Try saying that fast three times!) Dusty Sorensen is home from his Alabama-Missouri mission and reported in LDS Sacrament meeting last Sunday. Dusty is a son of Craig and Ramona Sorensen. Soren-sen. Deon Alvey was in St. George two days attending meetings on the Care and Share Program. Hal Shurtz had Kim and Vickie Nelson and Kerry and Jenny Shurtz here over the weekend. week-end. Kim and Vickie were on their way to Ferron for a family reunion. Kerry and Jenny have a new baby girl named Katelynn Geneal, named for her grandmother, grand-mother, the late Geneal Shurtz. They have another little girl named Carolee. Ruby Griffin, Jim and Janet Spencer and Dennis and Pauline Lott were all here, from the St. George area. Dwight Haycock is the new crew member for the County Road Department in the Esca-lante-Boulder area. His wife Chris says they may have some adjusting to do with him being home all the time. Out of the nine years they have been married, mar-ried, he has worked away from home seven. Arden and MaeVonn Taylor and Arlis and Melba Brooks had quite a hair-raising experience early one morning last week. They were on their way to St. George for doctor appointments when the wheel came off Ardens pickup. He said they never would have stayed right side up if it hadn't been for Arlis' backseat driving. He was yelling "Keep 'er on the road, boy, keep 'er on the road!" Janalee Bernardo came to their rescue, as they couldn't drive their vehicle home. They all went to Ruby's Inn for breakfast break-fast and returned home. Arden later kept his doctor appointments and reports that he is "doin' good for the shape I'm in." |
