Show Escaiante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Visitors Jerry and Sheree Roundy had lots of visitors here when they reported their mission in LDS sacrament meeting. Besides family and friends there was a large number of returned missionaries. Jerry had been their mission president in Sacramento, Calif. Lane and Geraldine Liston were visiting Danny and Sherrie Meisenbach and family of Orange, Calif, and Emilee and Jenifer Liston daughters of Gary and Sandy Liston, St. Johns, Ariz. Also from Orange, Calif, came David and Wendy Meisenbach who spent the holiday with Dale and Lillian Lyman. Dave and Raylene Whitefield, Las Vegas were at the home of Raylene's parents, Arnold and Deon Alvey. Visiting at the home of Chase and Helen Shurtz were daughter and son-in-law Sara and Dennis Cowles, Casper, Wyo. Katie Munson was home from . Provo. She was all excited because 1 only two and one-half more months she will have all her schooling in and will be able to get a job as a legal secretary. Congratulations, Katie, you have done well. Delora Rutherford, Maricopa, Calif., mother of Lora Engberg and Flint Enberg's son, Lee and two grandsons, Josh and Jeff Engberg of Riverside, Calif, all came to visit and stayed two weeks. Bob and Mavis Munson had part of their family here from Idaho and another part will be arriving this weekend. Reunions Family reunions are still in full swing. I think some of them must be starting over! But here goes The Charles John Roe family held their reunion at the city park with all the families represented. Also Budd and Aloha Porter, Provo; Ben and Renee Porter both of Escalante and Provo; Berniece Losee, Spanish Fork and Edith Sharp, Bountiful. From the Wilford and Ruby Roe family were Winona Sevy, Beverly Crosby and Earl and Evalyn Roe all of Panguitch; Kenneth Roe, Smithfield and Gene and Thais Griffin's family, Escalante. Representing Zina Roe Baker and family was her daughter Thelma Baker, Orem and son, Arnold Baker and family, Vernal. Verna Roe Vigo was here with her son, David Hall from Kaysville and Richard and Lorna Hall came from California. Sisters Irene Higham, Idaho and Joan and husband Dick Say, Orem came to represent their mother, Bona Roe Mason and Varley Roe's family was represented by daughter Elaine Welch, her daughter, Lydia, all of California. Another Haws reunion. This time the John Franklin and Minnie Haws family with 111 in attendance. From the Roland Porter and Mina Haws family were Velma Boulter, Escalante; Kenneth and Marie Griffin, Haws and Janet Porter, Ruscene Porter and Kern Porter, all of Provo. From the Henry Haws family Neta Poulson and Neal and Faye Jepsen, Boulder; Ila Winn, Richfield; Jim and Alene Haws, Torrey; Genevieve Wier, Pittsburg, PA; Sherrill' and Dorothy Jean Alvey, Layton and a number of great-grandchildren bringing their total to 19. Representing the Claud and Nan Haws family were Ben and Jackie Haws, California; J.C. and Eva Haws, John and Joy Haws and four children all of Brigham City. Doug and Maxine Haws, Hurricane represented the Bill Haws family, along with their daughter, Tami and a granddaughter, Jazeman. From the Dee and Elda Haws family were Klyn and Marlene Haws, Brandon Haws, Salina; Elda Haws, Donnie Randall, Don and Ethel Haws and their two grandsons, grand-sons, Robert and Wesley Groth, Killeen, Tex. From Albert Gledhill's and Jennie Haws family were Bessie Lighthieser, Mesa, Ariz.; Ken and Nedra Tucker, Morgan; Woodrow and Dorothy Gledhill and Hal and Karen Schutz all of Loveland, Colo. Bill and Dawn Griffin represented repre-sented the Amanda Haws and Will Peterson family and will be the host family for the reunion next year. The James Alvey and Sariah Haws family hosted the reunion and had the largest number in attendance, atten-dance, fifty-three in all. Ethan and Wanda Hansen, Layton; Ron and Frankie Freeman, Centerville; Luther and Deanne Smith, Kennewick, Wash.; Chan and Betty Mclnelly, Farmington and Lyn and Veda Hansen, Centerville. Fay Alvey had Steve and LaVee Wiscombe, Mapleton and Raven Coombs, St. George and Betty and Angie Alvey attended with Angie's two babies. Frank Alvey was in California. Ray and Sylvia Alvey brought two daughters, Lee Anne and husband hus-band Ryan Chiristensen and Christie and John and son Lane Alvey, all of Roy. Joining the Arnold Alveys for the reunion were their daughters and families. Janeen Duncan and Danny and Kristin Duncan, Loa; Andy and Denise Dube and Michael Dube, Las Vegas; Dave and Raylene Whitefield and Jessica and Justin Whitefield, all of Las Vegas. Orilla Cowles had 82 of her family here for their reunion. Leon Cowles and three sons, from Portland, Ore.; Twila Michelangelo, Richfield and her family here, Eric and Sherrie Woolsey and Danny and Kim Reid and families, Margean Schow and son and their families, Stanley and Marlene Stowe and Ronnie and Sydney Ann, Salt Lake City; Dennis and Sarah Cowles, Casper, Wyo.; Alvin and Joan Cowles, Richfield; Glen and Colleen Imlay who are camp hosts at Big Cottonwood Canyon, up north this summer. Also here were Orville Cowles' son-in-law, Wes Hall who came from Panguitch and brought part of his family; Newell and Dorothy Cowles, Richfield and Well and Emma Lou Mclnelly, Ellensburg, Wash, were able to be there this time. Rolain Alvey and family took to the hills for their annual family reunion. re-union. Tyler and Lisa Lyman, Faye Lyman, Donnie and Gwen Porter and their families of Escalante and Daryl and Dana Alvey of Cedar City. There's nothing like getting away from the heat and the telephones for a few days not to mention being with family. Iona Alvey had daughters . Arvonne (Mrs. Dee) Whittaker, Washington and Lana (Mrs. Tom) Jordan, Duchesne for the 24th ; celebration. They sold every copy ' of the book "They Called It Potato Valley" by the late Edson Alvey, but they report that they will be ordering more. July 24 Celebration It was fun to see former residents resi-dents at the parade during the recent celebration: Dale and Helen Jolley, Salt Lake City; Dick Droubay, Salt Lake City and his two sisters Julie Higdon, Glenwood and Christine Button, Kanab, and the family of Stanley Liston and June Van Hemert, St. George, who were here for a family reunion. Also Herb and Norene Allen, Harold and Ina Rene Griffin and Areola Gates all of St. George; Leon Cowles Portland, Ore.; Ronnie and Sidney Ann Stowe, Salt Lake City and Kay Gates, Elberta just to name a few. Accidents Dwight and Jaleen Vance, Austin, Tex., Wayne and Larene . Pollock, Thousand Oaks, Calif, and Cozan Latoski, Dacona, Colo, all spent a few days at the home of Neal and Alberta Liston. Wayne's ' son had an accident on a three wheeler and had to be taken to Panguitch for stitches in his leg, but other than that they had a good time. Jim and Janet Spencer and all their family came from Orem to go on a camping trip. Then they had to take Claron Griffin to the hospital hospi-tal in Panguitch and later, by life flight, to the Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo where he had surgery. Hope he is doing better by the time you read this. Max Porter had surgery recently but is out and about again and even went back to the LDS temple again this week. So he must be feeling better. Tillie Nixon suffered a heart attack. at-tack. She was taken to the hospital in Panguitch and later taken by life flight to Salt Lake City. She is doing o.k. at present and is at her sister's home in Salt Lake City. Alan Sorensen had to be taken off the mountain to Bicknell to have his thumb stitched up after a whittling accident. He is the son of Jon and Jillyn Sorensen, Salina. Cora Shakespear fell again and broke her leg in two places. She will be spending some time in the extended care facility in Panguitch. Ushur Spencer spent his birthday birth-day in Provo seeing his doctor. But between his and LaPriels kids he was honored with three or four par-' ties. Must mean you're getting younger, Ushur, if you can keep that up! Gene Griffin drove his Cadillac to the store one morning last week and when son, Brent, came to work a little later he noticed the Cadillac See Escalante News On Page 7-A Escalante News (From Page 6-A) coming down the meeting house hill. It was not Gene behind the wheel, but a large bearded man. Going into the store, Brent said "Dad, are you letting the tourists drive your car this morning?" Gene, looking rather startled, said "no" and they both went out to see what was going on. Eight or 10 people from Germany had congregated around the Cadillac to look it over. Having never seen one like it and noticing the keys in the ignition (which is 'not an uncommon practice around here) they decided to take turns test driving it. One lady didn't act like she knew too much about driving and Gene even had to give her instructions! After they had all taken the car for a test drive and had taken video pictures, they went on their way. I don't know if I would advise Gene to try something like that in Germany or not! Trips Deon Alvey and Velma Boulter picked Faye Worthen up in Panguitch and spent two days in Parowan and St. George attending meetings. Andy Vidrine, Riverton and Michelle Knudson, St. George spent two weeks with their grandparents grand-parents Bill and Clorene Vidrine. , The Vidrine's son, Marty and family fam-ily were here for the 24th of July festivities, then took Michelle back to Riverton with them for a week. Bill and Dawn Griffin spent two days in Midway last week visiting and playing golf with friends Dick and Betty Vanden Akker. New Baby Sam and Shelly Alvey, Elsinore have a new baby boy, their third. He is the 10th grandchild of Betty P. Alvey. |
