Show Western States Power Outage Affects Garkane RICHFIELD Saturday's power outage that disrupted electric service in seven western states and parts of Canada, also affected Garkane Gar-kane Power Association consumers and municipal power systems of Kanab, Fredonia, Colorado City, and Hildale. The Associated Press reported a "frequency disruption" in the Pacific Interconnect, a 500,000-volt electric grid that runs from Canada to Mexico. Unconfirmed reports suspected sus-pected a brush fire near the California-Oregon border could have triggered the disruption. Garkane General Manager Carl Albrecht indicated the interference on the California transmission line caused multiple transmission and generation interruptions in the West, including the electric generation gener-ation facilities at Glen Canyon Dam. "Garkane has a 138 kV line tied to the dam that feeds our entire southern system," said Albrecht. Outage durations varied throughout through-out the affected areas. Garkane customers cus-tomers were without electricity fof approximately one hour (4:45 p.m. until 5:40 p.m. MST) until service was restored at the Glen Canyon Facility, allowing power to flow again through southern Utah and northern Arizona. |
