Show r G : ' A- ) a, ,V' Friday night, Bryce Valley hosted Panguitch in their annual homecoming game. The Bobcats won By John Yardley Once in a while there is a game where it really is too bad that someone has to lose. Such was the case Friday night as Bryce Valley hosted Panguitch in their annual homecoming game. With Panguitch Pan-guitch leading by 10 with three minutes to go, the Mustangs rallied back. Panguitch missed free throws and BV converted. Both coaches Steve Hatch and Scott Hunt employed em-ployed dynamic coaching strategy. There were key players: Wayne Ott drove the middle three straight times for nifty lay-ins with the game on the line. Skyler Syrett got a huge offensive rebound and scored a basket. Jason Walters canned two pressure free throws. The two top scorers, Shannon Pollock Pol-lock for BV, and Dusty Orton for Panguitch, did what they are sup- 73-72 in the final seconds of the game when Dusty Orton nailed a three point shot . Down in crunch time with the score tied at 70-70 and four seconds to play, Pollock . calmly sank two free throws to make it 72-70. Orton got a nice inbounds pass, took the ball across half court and nailed his sixth three-point shot of the game to give the Bobcats the win, 73-72. Everyone was drained. The players, the coaches, the fans. Yes, a few fans got crazy, but, hey, that's the way it is around here. That's basketball. bas-ketball. Too bad it wasn't a tie. Neither team deserved the loss. The top scorers in the game, and there are others who play great games without scoring much, were Pollock with 20, Ott 15 and John Shakespear 12 for Bryce Valley. Dusty Orton had a career high 34, while David Henrie hit 17, Jason Walters 10 and Skyler Dalton 9, for Panguitch High. Every player in this game played with heart and intensity. Panguitch came back Saturday with an easy win over Piute 68-41. Dusty Orton hit for 27 and Jason Barney 14 to lead the scoring, but it was the passing and hustle as a team that counted most. Austin Owens, David Henrie, Garret Sawyer Saw-yer and Preston Gilbert are four seniors who provided leadership, defense and rebounding. Escalante finally got tipped over on Friday, losing to second place Valley 74-61. Valley had an outstanding out-standing fourth period to hold off the charging Moquis. Jared Smith had a big game with 18, Derrick Shakespear was tough again with (See SPORTS on page 4-A) SPORTS - From Front Page 16, and Ryan Cottam scored 14. On Saturday, the Moquis had to travel to Wayne to face the first-place first-place Badgers. After falling behind by 13 in the first half, the Moquis battled even in the second, but could not get closer, losing 80-66. Ryan Cottam continued his torrid scoring streak with 27, while Jared Smith was hot again with 22 and Ivan Singh hit for 9. It was a hard weekend for Jimmy Smith's crew playing the two top teams in the region standings. In girls action, Panguitch played one of their finest all around games of the year in turning back Milford 57-23. The whole team got into varsity action and all contributed. Pepper Hatch hit for 13 while Shelly Hatch and Camille Christen-sen Christen-sen each scored 11. PHS opened up a 30-7 half time lead. PHS finishes their regular season this week with Bryce Valley at home. Escalante got a big 19 points from Brittany Sandefer on their way to a 36-32 win over Piute. Escalante Esca-lante has had some tough games lately, and it was nice to get a victory. vic-tory. This was also a team win. Bryce Valley girls played Wayne and lost last Saturday. This week, Bryce Valley boys host Escalante on Friday night and play in Milford on Saturday. The girls play their last game in Panguitch. Pan-guitch. Escalante girls play in Orderville Or-derville on Thursday night and both the girls and boys are up against Wasatch Academy at home on Saturday. Sat-urday. Panguitch boys play in Orderville Or-derville on Friday and host Wayne on Saturday. In wrestling, Panguitch Pan-guitch goes to Wayne on Thursday and hosts Piute on Friday. |
