Cannonville, with a population of about 150, is surrounded by the newly created Grand Staircase-Escalante Staircase-Escalante National Monument and thousands of tourists pass the corner each year. The new motel may for the moment with all its Styrofoam plastic shell showing look anything but environmentally friendly. However, its bright white plastic-covered walls rising OkWWU'.. also feature a grocery store and gas pumps. The new motel, which will be called the Grand Staircase Stair-case Inn & Country Store, is the first in the county coun-ty to be named for the new national monument. Grand Staircase' Environmentally Friendly Motel Goes Up In Cannonville quickly in the center of Cannon-ville's Cannon-ville's scenic beauty are revealing reveal-ing a new type of construction expected to increase rapidly in popularity and markedly reduce the impact on the nation's forests. Under construction by Garfield Ready-Mix (formerly known for many years as Bryce Valley Builders), the company is setting a precedent in Garfield County, perhaps in the state of Utah, with its new building. Longtime builders, George Thompson and his three sons, Guy, Joe and George are excited about the new method and see it as the wave of the future in a nation that is trying to save its trees and where lumber is becoming increasingly more expensive. Rather than using conventional conven-tional wooden forms and framing, the dense Styrofoam plastic molds are set in place and the concrete poured. While the Styrofoam Sty-rofoam can be removed after the concrete has set, if left in place, it can serve as extremely efficient highly-rated insulation. Stucco, sheet rock, plaster, siding or other materials can then be applied, adding even more insulation. The concrete walls, solidly reinforced (See New Cannonville Motel Is Underway On Page 3A) Environmental Motel Underway From Front Page with re-bar, are eight inches thick for the foundation and lower floor and six inches thick for the upper floor. Only the roof will be constructed con-structed of wood. To increase energy efficiency, the building will also utilize ground-source heating with heat pumps circulating coolant from the refrigeration system throughout through-out the system in the summer and ground-warmed water for hating in the - winter. Slightly (about 25-percent) 25-percent) higher costs of construction con-struction are expected to be more than offset by saving in energy costs and insurance. Bryce Valley Builders Supply and grocery store and dry goods will move its operation into the new facility to function much as it has for years with an added snack bar and gasoline, pumps to accommodate four vehicles at one time. Carlon Johnson will serve as manager when the motel, gas station, and large convenience store open about mid-June. |
