Show Friends In The "Purest" Form Seldom do you see friendship at its purest; Cancer Awareness Week between Nov. 8 and 12 at Panguitch High was a week of united voluntary effort of a whole school. Several close friends of two fellow teachers, Debbie Pollock Pol-lock and Shawn Taylor who are cancer patients, wanted to demonstrate dem-onstrate their concern and love. Through the leadership and inventiveness inven-tiveness of Marlene Miller, Janice Hatch, principal Ted Chidester and faculty, the whole school worked hard to carry out their creative ideas, v.- The cry to help was shouted x by students and teachers alike. In fact, many town citizens joined in the efforts. Four days of assem-blies assem-blies by speakers touched directly by cancer, as well as professional j educators teaching self-protection a? programs were drawn to a close ij? by "The Little Miss Panguitch" ? contest Thursday night. All ; benefits were donated to the Can-' Can-' cer Association. ; - The students chaired many of the events and organizations such $ as FHA provided all the decora-'ii decora-'ii tions, treats, and needed services fj; for each event. Under FHA's r;i leadership, more than 20 quilts were made and donated to cancer patients. For days, many citizens may have at first wondered what the pink ribbon worn all week by the High School students represented. At the close of the week, no one in town should have been left uninformed. Educated citizens become social so-cial assets. The emotional health of the cancer patient is half the battle. So, by informing the community about the facts of cancer, unnecessary prejudice and fears don't have to be endured. en-dured. The burden the cancer patient is carrying physically is already unbelievable. When our daughter was diagnosed diag-nosed with leukemia in 1 996, the most hurtful part emotionally was the fact that she was totally isolated iso-lated from the world she had formerly for-merly known. Not only was she in terrible pain, completely isolated iso-lated with her caretakers, and stripped of all visible former self because of loss of hair and ballooning bal-looning facial features, her uneducated un-educated friends feared her; they were afraid they will catch what is as spreadable as a broken leg.
