This year, Art Challis, Assistant Assis-tant Professor, Communications, SUU, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the awards program at 7 p.m. Prior to the awards beginning at 5 p.m., a banquet will be held to JI UIJl UMIUJIUMlll..mlIMI honor the Sterling Scholar finalists and their parents andor guardians. The master of ceremonies for the banquet will be Van Bushnell, Assistant As-sistant Provost, Technology, at SUU. David W Grant, founder and president of the Metalcraft Technologies, Tech-nologies, Inc. (MTI) in Cedar City will be the guest speaker at the banquet. Students selected as finalists involved in-volved in the competition are from Beaver, Cedar, Canyon View, Dixie, Valley, Enterprise, Hurricane, Hurri-cane, Kanab, Milford, Panguitch, Escalante, Bryce Valley, Parowan, Snow Canyon, and Pine View High Schools. The 15 categories of competition competi-tion include English, SpeechDrama, Mathematics, Social So-cial Science, Foreign Language, Trade and Technical Education, Computer Technology, Agriculture Science, Family and Consumer Sciences, Business and Marketing, Music, Visual Arts, Dance and General Scholarship. Each of the 177 finalists will be judged on personal achievements and awards compiled in their portfolios portfo-lios and interviews with the judges. The finalists will be judged 50 percent on their scholarship; 25 percent on leadership, and 25 percent per-cent on citizenship. There will be three judges in each category. The judges are from local communities, Dixie College, and SUU. A winner and two runners-up in each of the 15 categories will be announced at the evening program and each will be given a Sterling Scholar pin. Finalists from each high school will receive an embossed em-bossed Sterling Scholar certificate. Colleges and universities are offering of-fering full tuition scholarships to the winners and part tuition scholarships schol-arships to the runners-up. Among the 19 competing from Garfield County School District are 11 seniors from Panguitch High School, seven from Escalante High School and one from Bryce Valley High School. Local students entered en-tered include (from BVHS), Eric Clarke, General Scholarship; (from EHS) Amie Christensen, Science; Heather Fischer, Dance; Tami Magleby, Ma-gleby, Business; Janae Jackson, General Scholarship; Nathan McLemore, Trade and Technical Education; Brett Fullmer, English; and (from PHS), Pepper Hatch, English; Paul Hulet, Mathematics; Teresa Clark, Business and Marketing; Market-ing; Katrina Bourland, General Scholarship; Travis Talbot, Science; Sci-ence; Heidi Woolsey, Visual Arts; Nicole Reynolds, Family and Consumer Con-sumer Science; Holly Emerson, Speech and Drama; Lindsey Bremner, Brem-ner, Social Science; Nicholas Mack, Trade and Technical Education; Educa-tion; Casey McCullough, Computer Com-puter Technology; and David Henrie, Hen-rie, Agricultural Science.
