Show Judge Sets Aug. 3 Hearing For Cowles PANGUITCH An Escalante man, charged with seven sex-related sex-related felonies made a first appearance in Sixth District Court on Monday where Judge Don V. Tibbs set his preliminary hearing for Aug. 3. Ronald Cowles, who was 18 at the time of his arrest in Escalante on March 12 of this year, is charged with three counts of rape of a child and three counts of sodomy of a child, all first degree felonies and each punishable by 1-15 years in prison to run concurrently or consecutively. .He is also charged with one count of sexual abuse of a child, a second degree felony. Cowles originally appeared in Justice Court before Judge Stan Foy where bail was set at $50,000. He has been free on bail since. Cowles, who graduated from Escalante High School in May, was ordered May 1 to undergo a mental evaluation under the direction of the Department of Human Services. Ser-vices. The preliminary hearing set for Aug. 3 is to determine if enough probable cause exists to bind Cowles over for trial. He is represented by James M. Park of Cedar City.
