Panguitch Takes Second; Escalante Fifth at Region 15 Tournament By John Yardlcy & Rebecca Bales The Piute Thunderbirds dropped the Panguitch Bobcats 79-73 in a thrilling Saturday night win at the Region 15 Basketball Tournament in St. George. Panguitch battled back from a 13 point fourth quarter deficit to lie the game at the end of regulation p'iy 63-63 on Elliott BrinkcrholTs 3 pointer. In the first overtime, Panguitch fell behind by four only to come back to tic 69-69 as Ben Savage hit a layup. But Piute stormed into the second overtime to win. Terrific team scoring by MarKay Englestead, who poured in 17, Jcramy Hcnric, 17, Jeremy LcFcvrc, 11, Elliott Brinkerhoff, 10, Aaron Howard, 8, Jarcd Black, 5, Ben Savage, 2, Kenny Tcbbs, 2, and Jimmy Frandscn, 1 in a gallant effort. Garret Hansen hit 17, Jason Rcity., 22, and Paul Morgan, 10 for Piute. In first days action, the Bryce Valley Mustangs lost a heated battle to Panguitch, 58-45. The Musuings were down by one at the half, with the Bobcats leading 25-24 25-24 at the break, but scored only 7 to Panguilch's 15 in the third quarter and 14 to the Bobcats 18 in the fourth, giving the Bobcats the final victory. David Shakcspcar nailed 14, Jed Johnson, 9, Matt Shakcspcar with 9, Waylon Brinkcrholt, 5, Justin Grimmer with 5, and Tyson Brinkerhoff, 3. The Moquis rallied back within two at 44-42, but went cold down the stretch. Robin Vcnuli hit 14, Gerald Roundy 10, Ryan Carter 10 and Heath Spencer 9. On Friday Panguitch raced out to a 51-36 lead after three quarters in their best all-around game of the year. The Bobcats went south for about five minutes in the final period, before holding on to defeat Enterprise 64-59. A great defensive effort and superior team passing was a thing of beauty in this game for Panguitch. MarKay Englcstcad sctircd 17 and Elliott Brinkcrhoff 8 for the Bobcats. As a team, every man contributed in a tough battle against one of the better teams in the tournament. Escalante eliminated Brycc Valley 65-57 on Friday. The Moquis lead 29-24 at the half and 48-40 after three. David Shakespcar carried the Mustangs to a big run in the second half as he hit from everywhere, but the Moquis held B.V. at bay. Shakespcar poured in 28 as the highest single game scorer in the tourney. Leading scorers for the Mustangs were Waylon Brinkcrhoff 10, Matt Shakespcar with 7 and Justin Grimmer 4 in Brycc Valley's last game, Escalanlc's Ryan Carter had a hot hand himself in scoring 23. Carter played an outstanding game dishing off the ball and playing terrific defense. Heath Spencer got his game going with 16, Gerald Roundy knocked down 15 and Mark Stewart 5 for the winning Moquis. On Saturday, Escalante defeated Wayne 62-57 as Gerald Roundy bombed for 19, Heath Spencer 17, and Ryan Carter 12. Escalante won the consolation championship in great style. It was a very close game in which the Moquis refused to fold-. Escalante competed in a play-off game against the Green River Pirates at Richfield on Monday afternoon. The Moquis beat the Pirates 74-69 in one of the most exciting games of the season, as they outscorcd them in overtime 12-7. Named to the all-tournament team were David Shakespcar, Brycc Valley; Heath Spencer, Escalante; MarKay Englcstcad, Panguitch; Kenny Tcbbs, Panguitch; Ryan Banks, Enterprise; Jason Rcitz, Piute; Jeff Ekkcr, Wayne; Jarcd Hoyt, Valley; Jarcd Barnes, Milford; and Kile Spencer, Valley. Richard McMullin, basketball chairman for Region 15 presented the all-tournament team awards. Panguitch and Escalante took off for the state tournament in Cedar City on Wednesday, Mar. 9. Here's how the area teams arc scheduled to play. At 2:30 p.m., Piute will have played Wasatch Academy, Region 14 7; at 7:30 p.m., Escalante would take on St. Joseph, Region 14 1, and at 9 p.m., Panguitch would tangle with Manila, Region 14 5. In other region seeding, Valley played Dugway at 11:30 a.m. and Enterprise took on Rich at 1 p.m. |
