This was the highest placement in the state tournament that an Escalante team has taken in the history By John Yardley The Escalante Moquis finished third Saturday night in the boys 1-A State Basketball Championships at the Centrum in Cedar City for their highest placement in the history of the school. Panguitch won fifth place in the tournament. Escalante was on a roll for sure as they came from the region tournament tour-nament out of the consolation side to win a playoff 74-69 over Green River on Monday. The Moquis then defeated St. Joseph's 66-59 on Wednesday, upset Panguitch on Thursday, lost their only game to Rowland Hall 71-66 on Friday and then beat Dugway 61-43. Panguitch played a pretty decent brand of ball themselves, defeating Manila by a whopping 75-24, losing los-ing to Escalante after leading most of the way 67-59, winning 70-64 over a very good Duchesne team and finally capturing fifth place of the school. Team members include Brent Thomson, Ben Venuti, Ryan Carter, Robin Ven-uti, Ven-uti, MikeLarson, Jason Spencer, Jamie Barnson, Heath Spencer, Mark Stewart, Gerald Roundy and Cody Coombs. Coach is Jim Smith. Escalante Moquis Take Third, Panguitch Fifth At State Finals with a relatively easy win 58-48 over ICS. Escalante got double figure scoring scor-ing from Heath Spencer with 21 and Gerald Roundy 20 to begin the tournament, with a 66-59 win Wednesday against St. Joseph's. On Thursday, Panguitch lead 17-15 after one, 32-24 at the half, and 46-42 46-42 after three. Escalante roared back to win a close one. Gerald Roundy nailed 22, Ryan Carter 14, Heath Spencer 9 and Robin Venuti 9 to lead the way for the Moquis win. Jamie Barnson came off the bench for 7, Mark Stewart hit 4 and Jason Spencer 2, a big two laic in the game. Panguitch had a great 3 12 quarters behind the scoring of MarKay Englcstcad 11, Elliott Brinkcrhoff 15, and Jeremy Hcnric's 9. but couldn't hold the lead down the stretch. It was huge win for Escalante. Panguitch rebounded for a 70-64 win over Duchesne. MarKay En- 'x glcslcad bombed in 18, Aaron Howard 13, Jimmy Frandscn and Elliott Brinkcrhoff 12 each in a thrilling come-from-bchind win for Coach Glen Partridge. Escalante trailed Rowland Hall all night before closing within three, only to lose 71-66. Gerald Roundy exploded for 29, Heath Spencer 11, Ben Venuti 10 and Mark Stewart 8 in the loss. Panguitch captured fifth on Saturday Sat-urday winning over ICS 58-48. Englcstcad drilled 18, Jeremy Henrie Hen-rie 10, Aaron Howard 10 and Kenny Tebbs 8. PHS was back to their great defensive play in the last two games. The first day blow-out for PHS 75-24 saw almost every Panguitch player score. Jared Black tanked 15, Englcstcad 11, Ben Savage 10, Aaron Howard 8 and Elliott Brinkcrhoff 9. Roundv finished un a creai tourney with 17, Ryan Carter banged in four three-pointers for 12, Heath Spencer nailed 1 1 and Jason Ja-son Spencer 9. Garfield Counly was rcprcscnlcd very well in the tournament. Enterprise won first, Rowland Hall second, Escalante High third, Dugway fourth, Panguiich fifth, Valley sixth, ICS seventh, and St. Joseph's eighth. |
