The group included journalists and professional photographers from four states and Canada, reprc-. reprc-. senting such diverse publications as the San Diego Tribune, and the San Diego-based Copley News Service; the Edmonton Sun, Edmonton, Alberta, Al-berta, Canada; Modern Maturity magazine; Modern Bride and a number of free-lance writers for travel guides. Travel Council members set out to impress the professionals with a carefully planned out-of-thc-ordi-nary view of the county and they believe, from the comments received re-ceived from the writers, that they were successful. Planning for the project began more than a year ago when Don Payne, president of the Western Region of the Society of American Travel Writers visited the area and strategized with the Travel Coun- Zeke Neilson. One photographer takes advantage advant-age of a unique photo opportunity. Writers were busy recording tales in the local vernacular. Travel Council Sponsors Writers And Photographers Garfield County Tour cil's Bob Benficld, Bruce Fullmer and Jean Scilcr. To provide an excellent variety and outstanding exposure to the sights and sounds of all the county, the Travel Council worked with local lo-cal business leaders and community volunteers to participate at every stop along their itinerary. The 16 writers left Las Vegas Sunday morning on Scenic Airlines for an tour of Grand Canyon, lake Powell and Brycc Canyon before landing at Brycc Canyon Airport. A shuttle tour look the group to Escalante Petrified Forest for their first stop, with lunch in Escalante. Optional tours in the area included Calf Creek Falls, Anasazi Indian Village State Park in Boulder, and a lour of Hole-in-the Rock Road and Devils Garden. They stayed at Circle D Motel in Escalante where they enjoyed a guest speaker and the Canyons of the Escalante video. Monday morning's time at Kodachrome Ko-dachrome Basin Slate Park was typical of the reception the writers and photographers received throughout the county. Kodachromc's colorful geological formations and the western flavor of the Trailhcad Station at the park provided the perfect backdrop for photo opportunities for the group as they visited with the wranglers who would accompany them on their horseback ride through the park. The wranglers, including Bob Ott who operates Scenic Safaris See Writers Visit Page 3A i, it Writers Visit Garfield County From Page 1 Tours at the park; Tawn Mangum and Shawn Morlcnson from BryccZion Trail Rides; Clint Mccham of Scenic Rim Trail Rides and Zckc Ncilson and Dave Roberts from Red Canyon Trail Rides combined their knowledge and tales of the area and their wrangling skills with their colorful "cowboy lingo" to the delight of the writers and photographers. The traveling group lunched at he Hungry Coyote in Tropic, made a quick stop at Water Canyon, and I arrived at Brycc Canyon National Park's visitor center for orientation and hikes on the Navajo Loop or Rim Trail. Dinner was provided at Rubys Inn where they viewed the Highway High-way 12 video and responded to a questionnaire about their visit lo the county before checking in for the night at Brycc.Canyon Pines Motel. Jean Sciler reported that the positive pos-itive feedback received on the questionnaires ques-tionnaires reassured the Travel Council their money had been well-spent well-spent on the project which was expected ex-pected to yield a profusion of articles arti-cles about the county's attractions, at a price far less than what it would have cost to purchase advertising. Recent articles in other publications have brought many pople into the county to sec for themselves the wonders they read about. |
