The award is particularly significant signifi-cant because it is the only award that stresses academia in conjunction conjunc-tion with athletic ability. Seniors Candie Orton, daughter of John and Carol Orton, and Andrea Howard, daughter of Clark and Flora Howard, were named to the 1992 1A Academic All State Basketball team. Each was awarded a plaque in recognition of her achievements. Awards were based on academic achievement, community involvement involve-ment and and athletic ability. Both girls' names were submitted for the awards by their coaches and with encouragement and help from school counselors as well. To enter, en-ter, they completed questionnaires inquiring about grades, sports, extracurricular ex-tracurricular activities, and the importance im-portance of sports in their lives. The combined grade point average aver-age of the 10 girls honored averaged 3.97. Both Orton and Howard have played basketball for four years. Howard also competes in track and Orton participates in drill team. The award requires that each girl must be a "starter" on the ball team as well as maintain a high grade point average. |
