Show Escalante Events Marilyn Jackson PB parades, programs, ponies, pud-I pud-I lvj dies and pouring rain accompanied i J popular Pioneer Day celebra- UAlthough the fireworks were missed by all, those individuals IB who, at the last moment, carried on the traditions of cannons and early morning serenading were greatly appreciated. A super program and 1 delicious dinner added to the festivities. It goes without saying that the fifteen-plus members of our community who are attending the Joseph Smith reunion with the Porter descendants, the five familiar faces who are on the Church History tour and the dozen or so boy scouts were missed. It is difficult to see everyone who was here with only two eyes, but we hope all felt welcome and will forgive us if you are not included in this short summary. Among those home for the holiday were Leslie Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Munson and the Kay Gates family. Evelyn Whatcott brought Virginia Bauer from Cedar City to share the weekend with Thelma Marsh and the Sharon Dale Marsh family who also had the Rick Woolseys. Mr. and Mrs. Theron Mitchell had daughter Tracy Robison home from Ely, Nev. Also seen were Mr. and Mrs. Newman Duncan and Mr. and Mrs. Rick Pruitt who stayed at the Melvin Alvey residence, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brown at the Hyrum Coleman home, Beth Blakey and sons at the Evadean Liston home and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Spencer who joined sister Linda Knight and children at the LaRue Spencer abode. Marie Hall had daughter, Arlene Elmer, husband, Joe, and three daughters home from New York. They live close to the Canadian border where Arlene is a tailor and her husband is in the armed forces. While home their youngest daughter, Rachel Elmer, was baptized into the LDS Church. They joined the Hall families for a family reunion in Payson Canyon where 67 were present before coming tor the celebration. Sisters Myrna, Carol, Peggy and Marva Mounteer spent several days in the area and took in the festivities festivi-ties before returning employment in Salt Lake City. Anne Haws stayed with the Delane Griffin family, who also enjoyed a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Ben Proter. Shcrree Rechtstciner came to be with the Frank Coleman family for the festivities and to convalesce from recent surgery. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nelson were at the LoRell Munson home and the Bill Griffins had daughter Patrice Eyre and Jeanctte Braithwaitc home with their husbands. Mark Pollock spent the weekend with grandmother Ethel Pollock and Mr. and Mrs. Max Porter had their son, Max, home. Richard Porter came to see mother, Elise Olt, and the Evan Spencers stayed with grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Maitland Spencer, while mother, Sherree Roundy joined in the Church History tour. Mr. and Mrs. Freeland Alvey have granddaughter, Vicky Sanders, of New Mexico and Tcrri Lynn Christcnsen and husband, Clyde, of Wyoming with the Norman Christensen family. The Christe-nsens Christe-nsens also had Mr. and Mrs. Keith Christensen of Cedar City and Juice Lyman of Boulder and the three children of Vadis Green, who will stay awhile. They also got to visit with the Louis Christensen family who had son, David, and many friends home for the occasion. Friends and family of Richard and Debbie Lyman met for the burial of their infant daughter, Kayla Lynn Lyman, who was born and died Saturday, July 18. Mr. and Mrs. Danny Woolsey came from Salina to share the weekend with mother, Clella Woolsey. Danny recently underwent surgery and his young son had a ' broken arm. Margaret Rollins came for the celebration and stopped to give friend, Clella, two Mexican sombreros for her wall. A change in the Escalante Ward bishopric came Sunday. Released were Jerold Johnson, bishop, and counselors, Lynn Griffin and Freeland Alvey. Sustained were Bishop Myron Cottam and rnnnselors Reed Munson and Dal Liston. Marc McLemore was sustained as executive secretary. Bill Griffin has been serving in that capacity. Mr. and Mrs. Klyn Haws and the Starns Mechams joined their Mecham relatives at Tropic Reservoir last Saturday for a family reunion. Inspite of the rain there were 40 present. Thais Griffin joined her sisters for a trip to Nauvoo, Boston and the Palmyra pageant. They plan to return through Washington D.C., Nashville, Tenn. and the southern states. Husband, Gene Griffin, jokingly remarked that if the gals weren't home by deer season, he would round up his brothers-in-law and go "hunt them." Thais hoped to see former resident, Cloma Napalitano, while in Rhode Island. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jackson took their children to Ely where Tom had a pistol competition. They toured a silver mine and Leman Caves showing the kids some of the areas where Tom grew up. Carlyle Shurtz and son, Michael, came from Sandy to help father, Beryl Shurtz, with chores and building projects while the Jacksons were away. Mr. and Mrs. Blake Schow and Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Collard visited the Shurtz relatives and celebrated the holiday in Escalante. The Collards cut their visit short after learning of the death of Vivian's brother-in-law. Former residents, Clone Newman and Dee Woolsey, brought various members of their families to join the Vardon Woolsey family for the celebration. Clone and her husband have lived in Ogden the past 35 years. The family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Griffin shared in the celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lott and daughter, Emily, joined Mr. and Mrs. Jim Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. John Spencer and newlyweds, Tamra and new husband, Jeff Olsen. Tamra and Jeff were married July 16 in the Salt Lake Temple by his uncle, Elder Marvin J. Ashton, and honeymooned at Sundance Ski resort Also sharing the Griffin's happiness were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey and Mr. and Mrs. Van Wiley of Antimony, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Willardson, Mrs. Tes Whiting and Ken Jacobson of Richfield, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Ott and Malen Mecham of Tropic, Mr. and Mrs. Budd Gates, Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Roundy, Mr. and Mrs. Quinn Roundy and Edna R. Smith of Seattle. Many of the nieces of Ruby Griffin and families of Las Vegas, California and Cedar Mountain also came for the occasion. Jolyn Peterson and LaRae Williams extended their weekends to include the anniversary party. Inspite of the pouring rain, there were over 300 in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Clark and cousin, Max Roundy and his wife, also were here for it. Mr. and Mrs. Reldon Sprague have their trailer parked beside the Cook Liston home and have been touring the area and sharing time with relatives in town. There are still some ailing among us. Hazel Griffin underwent surgery and is home convalescing. Former resident, Leone Bailey, has been hospitalized at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Porter joined wife Gloria's family in Antimony for the funeral services of her father, Lylc Ricketts, who died at age 82. Sherwood Wilson took mother, Berniece Wilson, to Montpclier, Ida. for funeral services of her father who died Friday in Logan at the age of 98. Clem Griffin and members of his family came to clean up their home here and attend the celebration. Candy Lyman had her father and members of his family visiting from California. Vernile Griffin and wife, Rena, came to spend the weekend with sister, Ethel Griffin. Marty Vidrine shared the holiday with the Bill Vidrine family. Roe Barney, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mciscnabch and the Tony Larsen families were also home. Mr. and Mrs. John Michaelangelo visited the Eric Woolseys. Linda Weldon Fitch recently received a promotion and transfer from the Forest Service. She and husband, Todd, are moving to Idaho. Also moving shortly are Mr. and Mrs. Phil Dendell who have been transferred to Lee's Ferry. Keith Carter chaperoned the boy scouts on their annual trip to Maple Dell. Donald Cowles and Doug Austin assisted the group consisting consist-ing of Forrest Christian, Darin Austin, Dallas Griffin, Ronald Cowles, Chon Barney, Canny Austin, Travis Cottam, Brian Stowe, Mattthew Simons, Daniel Carter, Nephi Carter, Ryan Judd, and Joby Venuti. Fonda Greenwood and Julie Nannenga are teaching swimming daily for the next two weeks for youngsters interested. |
