Show ; Lifetime Resident Honored As Grand Marshal In Parade Pioneer Day Grand Marshal in the Panguitch 1987 parade was lifetime resident Kern Owens. He ,0 rode in a 1931 Model A Ford belonging be-longing to Bruce Howard. As he rounded the corner of Center and g Main, one of the town wags yelled, "Hey Kern, what are you doing in the mother-in-law-seat?" He was I riding in the rumble seat so he J could be seen. Owens married Grace Beckstom i ; in the Salt Lake Temple on March fci 28, 1929. She died Dec. 2, 1981. Married 52 years and nine months B they are parents of two boys and three girls. There are now 27 ft( grandchildren and 27 great-grand-id children. His son Bruce Owens just retired (from the Garfield County School District after having served 31 years as teacher and administrator. The senior Owens spent the early ear-ly part of his life as a farmer. He then worked at the Brooklawn (Creamery, making cheese for 13 years. "Hard work", he said. He studied business and bookkeeping at the University of Utah and He- negers Business College in Salt Lake City. f, In 1955 an administrator was needed at the Garfield County Hospital. Hos-pital. Owens said that someone said, "Get Kern." He stayed at the hospital from 1955 until 1972. Then he said, "it's time to relax a little." He said he is very proud to have his 10th grandson on an LDS mission. mis-sion. Owens served in the North Ward Kern Owens Bishopric for 20 years, seven of which, he served as bishop. He stated that Panguitch Stake President Presi-dent John Yardley was his young home teaching companion who was always worrying whether or not he would get to go on a mission. "Look at him now," said Owens. He is a sprightly 81 -year-old who has a fine garden and pointed out that it was much bigger when he was younger."
