Show i Support Schools Editor, There has been much discussion even excitement about the possibility of the 4 day school week. After listening to the information infor-mation presented at the public meetings and speaking with various teachers and parents I've heard many express the idea that "it's time for a change." The School District received a $10,000 grant to study the possibility possi-bility of the four day school week, and they have extensively. There is an abundance of information available avail-able through the School District office. There is no conclusive evidence evi-dence that it will benefit the education educa-tion of our students. Their progress will have to be closely monitored. But the possibility and opportunity are there, even if we can only begin this year to push activities on to Friday and give the teachers the chance to teach. Another option presented was the five-day-extended time proposal, where school begins after Labor Day and gets out two weeks earlier. It's my opinion that this option fails to benefit teachers in their need for planning time during the year when they need it. It also fails in the attempt to keep students in the classroom. As a matter of fact when a child misses school for any reason, sports activities, even illness, ill-ness, they'll be missing more than they are now. While I still have a number of concerns about the affect the long hours will have on the Kindergar-den Kindergar-den through Third graders, and their reading program, I would still support sup-port the change to the four day week. Ticaboo has been on it for years now so a schedule for the coming year should be readily available. Let's just get on with it, give it a good try. The enthusiasm alone would help. Let's support the administrators, teachers and most of all the students stu-dents and see if we can't improve our system of education. Sincerely, Renee H. Nolan |
