Show County's Three High Schools Send Teams To State By John Yardley The Bryce Valley Mustangs held off a late surge by a tough Al-tamont Al-tamont team Monday night to capture cap-ture a place in the state playoffs which began Wednesday in Cedar City, by a 81-75 final. Coach Dan Haskell and his troops played hard and determined, against a team just as committed. The Longhorns had lost a close game 55-54 in the Region Re-gion 13 tournament the first day, to send them on the consolation side. They had a hustling team that went to the basket very well. Bryce Valley built up a nine point lead at half and led by as many as 14 in the third quarter, but fouls plagued the Mustangs and they allowed the Longhorns back in from the free-throw line. The game got close down the stretch as Altamont came within two inside four minutes. BV rallied back, only to see the Longhorns cut it to 74-70. A double foul, negated a two and one chance for Altamont that would have made it close at 74-73. At that point, the Mustangs finally hit some key free-throws to put the game away. Bryce Valley had some fine balance bal-ance scoring from Derrick Clark with 22, Mike Ahlstrom and David Shakespear with 16 each, Jed John son 10, Matt Shakespear 8, Justin Grimmer 7 and Chance Stewart 2. Ben Shewman and Tyson Brinker-hoff Brinker-hoff also played and gave quality minutes when the team was in foul trouble. Johnson and Grimmer combined for 17 points from their shared guard position and played terrific defense, coming up with several steals and deflections. The game was a little ragged, with the teams combining to shoot 79 foul shots. However, Bryce Valley will happily take the win and a trip to the state tournament. The Region 12 teams will play as follows on the schedule: 10 a.m. Valley plays Dugway; 11:30 Pan-guitch Pan-guitch plays Rich; 1:00 Piute takes on Monticello; 4:30 Escalante tackles Mt. Vernon and at 7:30 p.m. Bryce Valley takes on Rowland Row-land Hall. All Region 12 teams can be heard on KMXU f.m. In other basketball news, Pan-guitch Pan-guitch won the Sophomore Tournament Tour-nament last weekend in Panguitch. A great crowd followed the Region Re-gion 12 sophomore teams and witnessed wit-nessed a competitive schedule of games. Panguitch stopped Milford in the final on their home court 61-51. 61-51. Escalante defeated Wayne 72-57 72-57 for third and fourth places. Enterprise En-terprise got past Valley for fifth and sixth, while Piute downed Bryce Valley for seventh and eighth. |
