Show J uveniles Suspected Of Starting Daves Hollow Forest Fire BRYCE Referrals to juvenile juve-nile court are pending on three Brycc Valley young people suspected sus-pected of starting a fire that burned more than 40 acres in the Daves Hollow area on the Dixie National Forest between Rubys Inn campground camp-ground and Bryce Canyon National Park. The fire was apparently started late Friday night or early Saturday morning by the youngsters suspected sus-pected of partying in the area, who, evidence indicates, tried to extinguish ex-tinguish the fire unsuccessfully. The fire was started less than 500 yards east of a prescribed burn area in which Forest Service personnel per-sonnel had been working during the previous week. During the night, the fire kicked up, and, feeding on collected fuel under the trees, began burning in earnest. The fire was spotted before noon on Saturday with National Park Service personnel the first to respond. Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the afternoon and evening. Most of the time it burned somewhat like a prescribed burn, accomplishing some good until winds came up and whipped it out of control. Firefighters returned on Sunday to continue their battle until the fire was out. A bit of good detective work by Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer Don Mosicr with the help of Bryce Canyon National Park Ranger Ken Kerr resulted in apprehension appre-hension of the suspects in less than six hours after the two began working on finding those who had started the blaze Sunday morning. Mosier stated he was fortunate in discovering the suspect vehicle at Rubys Inn parking lot, but feels he would have found it easily simply by searching the surrounding area. Forest Service personnel expressed ex-pressed their concern over the high fire danger from fuels that have collected in some areas and urged special care. |
