Show Anna Yazzie Wins Third Place in State Contest Panguitch High School's Anna Yazzie captured third place runner-up in the sixth annual Miss Indian Scholarship Pageant held at Orem Junior High School, Saturday, March 30. Miss Yazzie, a Sterling Scholar candidate and senior at Panguitch Ann Yanio t High, competed against eleven college students. Miss Yazzie practiced until 11 p.m. Friday with other contestants and the group practiced again Saturday until noon on a special production number for Saturday night's program and competition. They also practiced dancing, walking, posture and poise from 9 a.m. until noon when they had lunch with the contest judges at the banquet room of the Golden Corral in Orem. Miss Yazzie said she received special instruction in walking, speaking, make-up and in hair styling. The contestants were judged on their appearance in swimsuits and formal wear, on individual talents, and on personal interviews. Miss Yazzie, a talented artist, dressed in her native Navajo costume for the talent portion of the competition. She sketched for the judges while slides of her art, work were shown. During her personal Interview, Yazzie explained to the jduges the Upward Bound program in which she has participated. She told judges she decided to compete to try to win a scholarship. She said achievement Is Important to her, and she is determiend to reach her goal of going to college where she will major in business and minor in art. She said she feels the contest helped to give her self-confidence. She said also that the practices were fun and that she made many good friends. The top five winners were: Miss Indian Princess, Alice Harris, student at Brigham Young. University from South Carolina; first runner-up, Rochelle Taylor, University of Utah from Mid vale; second runner-up, Angela Moore, BYU, Pleasant Grove; third runner-up, Miss Yazzie; and fourth runner-' up, Lena Deschine, Snow College, Ephraim. |
