Show Health Post Not Denied Director, Record Shows A story in last week's issue of Garfield County News that Bill Coffman had been denied post with x the Southwest District Health Department by the Garfield County Commission, was Incorrect. Coffman, who is director of the SWDHD, appeared before the l county commission to request anp appointment of someone from Garfield County to serve on the 10-. member board of the SWDHD. Commissioners appointed retired registered.nurse Cleo Henrie to the' post, Coffman was appointed director of the SWDHD in September 1983. The department operates under the Five County Association of Governments in St. George, serving Garfield, Kane, Beaver, Washington and Iron Counties. 5SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS9) Coffman said that the primary function of his department is, to prevent disease and that it is con-, cerned with water quality, air quality, vaccinations against diseases, food handling, and sewage disposal. His department provides clinics locally in Escalante, Bryce Valley, Boulder and Panguitch where public health nurses make available vaccines against disease. His department supervises construction of sewage disposal systems such as the large lagoon systems used by cities and towns to the smaller individual septic tank and drain field systems used by private citizens. Food handling certificates are issued through his department which makes available on a regular basis courses for those involved in handling food for public consumption. The SWDHD does not provide prescriptions for medications or any type of therapy nor does it provide construction consultants, Coffman said. The board of directors of the SWDHD meets on alternate months, rotating its meetings throughout the five county area it serves. Each of the five, counties has two members serving on the board.
