Show It Makes Cents BY VI JUDGE Dear Vi: I enjoy your column so much. It seems that we homemakers always like to learn new ways to do things. Have you ever used plastic lids for molding hamburger patties? I mash a ball of hamburger into a lid, cover it with a piece of plastic wrap, add another lid, and.repeat, and so on. Then I put the whole stack into the freezer. The patties come apart easily and you can slip them out of the lids, all nicely shaped. I find countless uses around the house for ties cut from old pantyhose. Cut them across, then snip them opan and use them for closing garbage bags whenever you need a tie. The plastic racks you buy for stacking small plates can be hung from a towel rack in the bathroom. Each rack will hold six or more washcloths at a height children can reach. Edith Starke, Evanston.Wy. It just occurred to me, Edith, what a good idea it is to have washcloths handy for children to wipe their hands on. You know how inclined kiddies are to wet their hands and wipe the dirt off onto a towel. The racks you describe for this would be perfect for this. We could tell the children the wash clothes are mini towels especially for them. Think what a lot of washing this would save. A whole bunch of washcloths wouldn't take up any more space than one bathtowel. Thanks for sharing. Dear Vi: Help! Some crayons got in the washer and all over the batch of clothes. What do I do now? DistresedMom Try kitchen shortening on the crayon marks, then rub in detergent until at least the outline of the stains disappears. Then wash as usual. If some color still remains, try a commercial spot remover, cleaning solvent or bleach if the fabric in question will stand bleach. It is too bad you didn't notice the stains before you put the clothes in the dryer as heat tends to set colors. Dear Vi: Hair ribbons get wrinkles but that's no problem for me. I Just slide them underneath the clasp of the curling iron while it's hot and they come out smooth. Cindy Gunther, age 11 You can also pull ribbons over a light bulb while it is hot to iron them, Cindy, but not wet ones. That would shatter a hot bulb. When you wash your ribbons, spread them out flat on the counter and let them dry. Most of them will come out perfectly smooth. Thanks for writing, dear. I'm sure your hair and ribbons always look lovely. Readers: This is your feature. Keep those good ideas coming. Just mail yours to IT MAKES CENTS, P.O. Box 122, or in care of this newspaper. |
