Meanwhile, the Panguitch Bobcats edged Enterprise 7-6 to up their season's record to 2-0. Escalante played one other game last week, losing a close one 7-5 to Valley. At Escalante, Coach Clare Ramsay's crew blasted away on Moqui pitching to score a whopping 20 runs. The maturity of the Mustangs really showed through with pitcher Dallin Baugh being backed by fine defense. Wade Ramsay, George Thompson, Richard Ott, Troy Goulding and the Pcltner boys all contributed for BV, along with the rest of the squad. t In Escalante's other contest, pitcher Jerry Hawkes did a fine job on the mound and the entire team hit fairly well, but the Moquis failed to hold on for the win. Hawkes, Clint Porter and Dirk Durfey are Coach Jim Smith's veterans. Panguitch got superb early inning pitching and hitting to take a 7-3 lead after five innings. A whole host of Panguitch hitters contributed with the clutch blast coming from the bat of Jeff Veater. With the bases loaded and two out in the third, Panguitch trailed 3-2 and the slugging left fielder lined a shot into right field scoring two runs and giving Panguitch the lead for good. Jeff Burton, Nate Brinkerhoff, Lawrence Orton, Kris Barney, Scott Simkins and Earl Jolly also contributed key hits. Dave Ipson and Heath Sartini played well in the field for Panguitch. In the seventh and final frame, ace lefty Nate Brinkerhoff walked four consecutive batters before finally settling down and getting out the side. That moved the Wolves to within one a 7-6. For Enterprise, a team picked to contend for the Region 12 title, freshman pitcher Malen Williams was impressive. Enterprise has a solid defense and will be tough all u ye ar. Coaches Kay.Englestead and jLPiitDix; were happy with theij ! team s tjverau performance. ' On the "national scene, the NFL began this last weekend with a whole slate of action. Perhaps the most exciting game was the gallant comeback on Monday night which saw the Dallas Cowboys nip their arch-rivals Washington Redskins 31-30 at Washington. Danny White, who has been on the carpet for his Job during the preseason, threw for three touchdowns and ran for another all in the second half as Dallas overcame a 23-3 half-time score. In baseball, three of the four divisions are still up for grabs. Only the Chicago White Sox appear to have a spot in the playoffs as they lead Kansas City by a whopping 12 games. In the other American League races, Baltimore has opened up a four and one-half game lead, but the Yankees, Brewers and Blue Jays are all within striking distance. In the National League East, Pittsburg, Philadelphia and Montreal are in a heap within a game of each other. In the west, the Dodgers opened up a three and one-half game lead over the Braves last week while the Braves were losing six straight, but Atlanta closed it back to one and one-half early this week. With a crucial three-game series in Los Angeles this Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Braves and Dodgers will be getting down to the nitty-gritty. Friday and Saturday's games may be seen live on WTBS at 8:35 local time for those with cable television. It appears in the NL West, the Dodgers, Braves and possibly the Astros will battle it to the wire. |
