Show Excells Win Second Half ByJohnYardley R. J. Excells won the men's Softball second half title Wednesday night as they wrapped up thier second win of the week. Tuesday, the Excell team beat the Waterhole as the S&C clipped the Meat House to grab a win and hve the Excells lose. But the Waterhole, finally with a full team, rallied to beat the Meat House and leave the second game, Excells vs SUE, only academic. These developments lead to the best of the three series pitting the S&C against Excells beginning with a Thursday night double-header. In the first game, tension was high as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie after five innings. In the sixth, with two out and a runner on first, Wally Veater drove a ball into right center that went clear to the fence allowing the runner on first to score, making it 6-5, Excells. In the top of the seventh, the S&C had runners on first and second with no outs, but pitcher Dick Excell held the S&C hitters in check with three easy gound outs to preserve the win for Excells. Kelly Holman at shortstop and Greg Excell at second base played good defense for Excells. The second game found the S&C with their backs to the wall. Craig Tebbs lead off the home half of the first with a homne run to lift the S&C to 1-1 tie and, from then on, the S&C'ers were hard to stop. Martin Nay drove in five runs with a bases-loaded double to lead the way and the S&C went on to Win 14-6. Defensive play by Rick Burningham ' t. at. short, Bob Lowe at second, Tod Trout at first, and Jon Moody in Cen-terfield together with great pitching by Dave Harris and Kevin Moore, helped hold the hot hitting Excell team to six runs. Other game stars included hitting by the S&C's Mark Orton and sparkling shoe-string catch in Centerfield by Excells Kay Surtz. The final game for the league title will be played Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. at the city Softball park. These two teams should make the finals a real battle. In national sports, the major league baseballdivlsions are retting tight. Atlanta climbed back to within one game of the Dodgers with with a four-game winning streak. In the National League division, St. Louis continues hot with a game lead over Philadelphia. In the AL West, Kansas City and California are near at deadlocK, but AL East Leader Milwaukee is fairly firm at four games up. In football, local favorites Gifford Nielsen and Jim McMahon fired their teams, Houston and Chicago, back, with two TD passes each, but were both too late as their teams lost. |
