Show JU8t Stuff XA by Jan W Don't you feel just a little sorry for August? It's the only month out of the year that has nothing to boast about; no holidays to plan sales around, no birthdays to get off work for, no great days of remembrance to be remembered for. It V ii i ii ii 1 doesn't even have the beginning or ending of a season within its days. September can boast Labor Day, a traditional "long" weeekend to honor the working person; and Autumn begins on the 23rd. October has Columbus Day right in the middle, the 12th, and ends up the month with .the' ghosts and goblins of Halloween. The 11th of November is the traditional Veteran's Day, in honor of the men and women who fought in the armed services for the protection of our country. The 25th is the day we give thanks for all our bounteous harvest by blowing our diets and feeding our faces. December, of course, is a magical time with Christmas nestled near the end of the month, the warmth of the celebration filters through the entire month, and winter begins on the 22nd. Noise makers, balloons, champagne and streamers bring in the new year, right at the beginning of January. Father time exits with his scythe, turning over his job to the new year. February, birthday month of the presidents; with Lincoln's birthday on the 12th and Washington's on the 22nd. Of course, for the convenience of the working class and any one else who wants a day off, both birthdays are celebrated on the Monday in between, this year, the 15th known as President's Day. One can't forget the 14th the day for lovers in honor of St. Valentine. Don the green and bit o' the Irish. March has St. Patrick's Day on the 17th. With Spring beginning on the 21st comes a rebirth of nature, and Spring Fever to students, workers and mothers alike. April begins with the "wee. little people" and their foolish tricks on April Fool's Day, with the Easter bunny just around the corner on the 11th. May is remembered for remembering mothers on Mother's Day, May 9. It ends remembering those loved one's who have passed away, Memorial Day, May 31. June 14 is Flag Day, in honor of the American Flag. It is also my sister's birthday, and when she was a little girl she thought they flew the flag just for her birthday. On the 20th we remember the great men in our lives, not hubbies or boyfriends but our fathers and summer begins the very next day. "Seventy-six trombones lead the big parade," or the nearest thing the high school band has, for the 4th of July in celebration of the birhtday of the nation. Utah was declared to be "the place" by Brigham Young on July 24, Yep, August is just a a plain old month, with the no frills, no holidays, no birthdays, no vacations but, it's still a pretty good month! |
