Show Dramatic Rescue Saves Salt Lake Couple From Drowning ' PANGUITCH LAKE - Two Salt Lake City grandparents are alive today to enjoy their 25 grandchildren thanks to. the quick action of two youthful employees of Lake View Resort at Panguitch lake. The grandparents, Lillian and Don Cartwright, were spending the July 4 weekend fishing at Mammoth Creek when they decided to try their hand at lake fishing at nearby Panguitch Lake. They launched their 10 foot aluminum boat and soon were fishing about one-half mile from the boat dock at Lake View Resort. Excited about a fish on their line, both moved to the same side of the boat at the same time, causing it to capsize. Mrs. Cartwright, who could swim a little, was wearing her life jacket. Mr. Cartwright who could not swim grabbed for his life jacket and missed, just as he hit the water. Both clung desperately to the side of their small boat and began shouting for help with the cold water quickly sapping their strength and their body heat. No other boats were within hearing distance of their cries for help, but 16- year-old Tracie Tores, Hacienda Heights, Calif., who works summers with her mother at the resort was seated in the family trailer facing the lake when she heard the faint cries of the drowning pair. She dashed madly to the resort store to summon help and while she was relating the incident to owenr Put Butler, 18-year-old Jeff Henry, the dock hand employed at the resort, overheard. Mrs. Butler said that young Henry did not even hestiate, but "flew out the door and across the highway to the boat dock." There he piloted Lake View's 16 foot aluminum craft with its outboard motor quickly to the site of the overturned boat. Without thought for his own safety, he pulled the weakened pair aboard and was able to retrieve their overturned craft and tow it back to the dock. He said that the couple remained very calm throughout the entire rescue, but were very drained and weary from their icy ordeal. After resting from their experience, both Cartwrights expressed their gratitude to young Henry for his unselfish act. Henry, a five year veteran of working at the boat docks on the lake, reminds people that it is important to wear a life jacket, pointing out that incidents such as this one allow no time to put one on. He lives in Brentwood, California during the winter months. |
