Show I lt I Makes Cents k BY VI JUDGE ! Dear VI: ) I was interested in your banana batida drink. I'm, l going to try your carrot i batida. Here's a similar drink we make, except r that it's more like a milk i. shake. Freeze milk in ice cube trays. Add a few cubes at a time to a little j) milk in your blender. Add fruits and flavoring of your choice. I've used ( bananas, nuts, k strawberries, vanilla, chocolate mix, etc. (I've even used canned ) peaches and apricots.) k Blend to desired con- sistency, adding more ( milk or more cubes if K needed. We have a cow and this k has been a great way to 7 use extra milk. We got this idea form dairy-h owner friends, i Los Evans, Hamer, Idaho k Dear VI: We try to control our fat ? consumption, but we're 0 also "hung up" on doughnuts. How's that for h a combination. To drain off as much oil as possible K after frying them, we hang ours on a coat-v hanger wire across a pan -) to catch the drips. Much r more effective than h laying them on paper towels to drain. You can taste the difference. 1 Which reminds me of another small economy ) we've learned. Instead of r using several layers of n paper towels for draining fried foods you can't ft hang all of them we lay down a mat of Jk newspapers with one layer of paper toweling on L top. This absorbs the ) grease just as well and ( that roll of paper towels f) lasts much longer. Enid Worthington f Wow, with the price of x paper goods these days, V that's not just a small ) economy. Thanks for r sharing, Enid. h Dear Vi: ( We cut window screen (plastic) in a circle to fit the drains in our house. This keep hairs and lint from clogging them. When dirty, simply throw the circle away and replace with a new one. ArleneM. Cedar City, Utah Dear Vi: I serve stuffed tomatoes and peppers quite often while there are plenty in our garden. One help I'd like to share is to bake them in muffin tins lined with paper liners. Serve in liner and they won't fall apart. Mrs. N. J., Mesquite, Nevada Dear Readers: I know women who have never made jam or jelly. They think it's too difficult. Yet it's not. It's easy. Here's a super easy way to make jam and it's so delicious you'll never want to go back to the old way. Takes only one-half as much sugar, too. QUICK AND EASY, SUPER-DELICIOUS JAM 1. Prepare fruit, 4 cups peeled and forced through a collander or use your blender to make a puree. 2. Stir in: 2 cups sugar and cup or more lemon juice, (optional) 2. Boil in large heavy pan for 10 or 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Stir in: 1 package flavored gelatin dessert. 5. Pour into jars and seal or store, unsealed, in refrigerator. Combinations we like: Strawberries with strawberry gelatin; pineapple with orange, peach with orange, apricot with orange or pineapole, any kind of berries with their own or lemon flavored gelatin. (If berries have a lot of seeds you may want to . strain them out.) , We use tropical fruits here in the Dominican Republic. Our favorites are mango, papaya, and pineapple. Keep sending in your good ideas. They make our column fun and helpful. Address: It Makes Cents, co your newspaper. Love you all, Vi |
