Show Foreign Journalists Marvel at Beauty Of Southern Utah During Summer Tour Visiting foreign journalists voted Bryce Canyon National Park the most outstanding attraction among the many they visited this past summer. So stated a recent letter to Paul and Keela Mangum, owners of Bryce-Zion Trail Rides, Tropic, from Len Gashel, editor, Advertising and Media Services, United States Travel Service, (USTS), Washington, D.C. The Mangums hosted the group of traveling journalists from France, Germany, Japan, and Mexico along with two interpreters from the University of Nevada and representatives of the USTS during their stay at Bryce Canyon National Park where the highlight of their trip was a horseback ride down the scenic trails of Bryce Can von. Before arriving in Utah, the group One of the spectacular views of Bryce Canyon National Paik as experienced by foreign journalists, visiting had visited eastern Texas where they attended the Texas Prison Rodeo at Huntsville. While they found all aspects of their trip enjoyable and interesting, it was only in southern Utah that they discovered the true "old west" atmosphere which they had expected to find in Texas. Real life cowboy Mangum and his wranglers proved exciting journalistic Bryce Valley on a scheduled tour at guetU of the United State Travel Service, Washington, D.C. material for publication when the visiting writers returned to their native lands. An evening of typically American folk dancing at Ruby's Inn topped off their final day with high-kicking local square dancers. The Ponderosa Promenaders, delighted the representatives of the foreign press. Gashel supplied the Mangums with copies of follow-up coverage which appeared in several French publications. In "La Montagne" (The Mountain) a Paris regional daily, under the section "Vacances et Loisirs" (Vacations and Leisure) the reporter praised the vast open spaces of the American west, particularly the Bryce-Zion area which was lauded as "Best of the West." Obviously charmed and awed by the spectacular scenery, the author of the article treated French readers to a vivid description of the beauties of southern Utah illustrating his article with a colorful photograph of his Bryce Canyon trail ride. In her article in the Paris daily, "Le Telegramme de brest," Anne-Yvonne Paugam described the splendor of Bryce Canyon and the excitement of her trail ride with the "real American cowboy" leading her group. Relating her final hours in the "promised land of the Mormons", Paugam described the enthusiastic square dance performed by the Promenaders as something akin to the minuet and quadrille of her French ancestors. "It's unfortunate," noted Mrs. Mangum, "that this beautiful scenery so much appreciated by foreign visitors has not even been teen by many local people." Gashel, in his letter, stated other similar visits by foreign journalists are planned but recent cuts in the Department of Commerce budget may prevent their taking place. |
