Panguitch Drops Piute 69-40,Remain$ Only Undefeated Region Eight Team In what appeared to be rather easy win, PanguiWh's Bobcats rolled past rival Piute 69-40 to remain the only undefeated team in Region Eight's 1-A basketball race, Gunnison, who had led Division One, took their first taste of defeat at 'the hands of Beaver 58-51. The Bobcats mixed their usual Impenetrable defense with a brilliant ofiense to take their win Friday night. Panguitch cruised to a 14-4 first-quarter advantage and extended the margin to 36-13 at the halfway break to coast into winner's row and boost its record to 6-0 In Division Two. Doug and Jeff Owens shared scoring honors for the Bobcats with .14 points apiece, while Kevin Frandsen chipped in 11 and David Black nine. Scott Bagley popped In 21 points to pace the T-Birds. Wayne remained only a stepping stone behind Panguitch, while improving to 5-1, as the Badgers outscored Valley 18-6 in the third quarter to frost the victory. Tim Dietlein, Craig Hanks, Martin Clark and Dwight Brown each hit double figures for Wayne, with Hanks topping the list with 24 counters and Dietlein 22. Brett Lamb collected 13 points to pace Valley. In other Region Eight shootouts Friday, Milford tipped past North Sevier, 86-72; Kanab outdueled Parowan, 72-67; Wayne coasted past Valley, 76-53; Bryce Valley downed Escalante, 79-71; and Panguitch waltzed past rival Piute, 69-40. Beaver boosted its record to 5-3 and gained sole possession of second place in Division One, as the Beavers overcame a 15-14 first-quarter deficit to assume a 26-26 deadlock at halftime, exploded to a narrow 38-37 third-period advantage and outscored Gunnison 20-14 during the final eight minutes to ice the triumph. Lowe, an Intimadating 6-5 pivotman, led Beaver with 19 points, while soft-shootlnp guard Marshall chipped in 18 and Joe White seven. But the Beavers won the game defensively. Beaver limited Bulldog Greg Hill to 10 points, while Brent NieUen swished 14. Milford grabbed a share of first place at 7-1, as the Tigers fired away from a 41-34 half-time , edge to outscore the Wolves 21-17 In a wild fourth period to assure the victory. Mark Nelson led the Milford scoring parade with 20 points, while Ken Jones dropped in 17 and Randy Kerr 15. North Sevier's Travis Simpson took game high honors with 26 points, while Shannon Heaps and Mitch Camp added 10 apiece. |
