Show Some Station Operators Selling Free Road Maps The Utah Department of Transportation is warning motorists to beware of and report service station operators that are selling the new 1977-78 official Utah State Highway Map. The maps are printed and distributed free of charge by the Utah Department of Transportation and are paid for by an appropriation from the Utah State Legislature. They carry the message, "Issued for Free Distribution by the Utah State Department of Transportation" on both the front and back covers. A legal opinion written by Assistant Attorney General Mark Madsen says service station operators who sell the maps appear to be in violation of two diffferent state laws, resulting in the commission of Class A and Class C misdemeanors, and could be persecuted. "Stations which are found to be repeated violators will, at the very least, have their supply of maps cut off," Paul Sheffield, UDIT Community Relations Director said. "We are working closely with the Utah Association of Petrolum Retailers in an attempt to get this practice stopped." People who are asked to pay for the maps are rwquested to contact the UDOT Office of Community Relations at 533 5656 with information on the name and location of the service station involved. Over a million of the maps were recently received by UDOT from the printer. They feature additional scenic photography this year and a new idea called "strip maps," that show locations and designs of all the interchanges and intersections on Utah's interstate highway system |
